MEC appoints new CEO: Philippe Arrata

B.C.-based outdoor equipment chain MEC has appointed Philippe Arrata as its CEO, six months after Business in Vancouver broke the news that CEO David Labistour planned to step down after more than 11 years at the helm.

Arrata has been a member of MEC’s board of directors since April, 2015. His day job has been at Best Buy Canada for more than 11 years, most recently as CFO, since November, 2017. There, he oversees finance, strategy, supply chain and the business-to-business department.

Sobeys unveils online grocery delivery strategy | Grocery Business News

Empire Company Ltd. has unveiled the name and brand for its e-commerce strategy: Voilà by Sobeys and Voilà par IGA. Empire is investing close to $200 million in total to build a robotic distribution centre in Montreal in addition to one currently under construction in Vaughan, Ont., just north of Toronto, to support home delivery of online grocery orders.

The new e-commerce platform will support customers in the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa and major cities in Quebec. The Vaughan facility is slated to launch next spring with the second Montreal facility expected to launch in 2021. (Grocery Business Magazine)

Canadian Tire profit falls, but revenue and sales gain ground

Canadian Tire Corp. reported its first-quarter profit fell compared with a year ago as revenue moved higher. The retailer says it earned a profit attributable to shareholders of $69.7 million or $1.12 per share for the quarter ended March 30. That compared with a profit of $78 million or $1.18 per share a year earlier.
