The push toward the elimination of single-use plastic grocery bags has raised fears about the alternative reusable bag.
“Allowing anyone to bring dirty, contaminated bags into the store is begging for contamination of the food supply,” Jim Matthews, a retired Nova Scotia scientist, said in an email.
“People talk about lettuce having salmonella,” Matthews said. “If there is an outbreak of salmonella or E. coli at the grocery store, where do we turn for food? What about those used bags contaminating the hands of cashiers. Why risk bringing unknown pathogens to the grocery store?”
