Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player when he joined the Brooklyn dodgers in 1947. This impacted the nation because there were many protests against this and it was easy for him. This impacts me because I've always looked up to Robinson because of his mark on the world and his perseverance through that tough adjustment. This connects to now because there are man pivotal people that Americans look up to based off of traits like this one. And because of him baseball is a much more diverse sport for all to enjoy.
The cold War was fought for a very long time. Between 1947-1991. It was a rivalry between the Soviet Union and US and western allies. This impacted the country because it occurred soon after world war 2 and the after math of this war was not pretty. This impacts me because I didn't know about this war until I did a little research. And this connects to today because the war occurred partly because of economic separation between the Soviets and the west and there are definitely still economic separations in the world.
The star spangled banners lyrics were made on September 1814 but wasn't technically designated as the national anthem for the branches of the military until 1916. This impacted the nation because first it was only used for the military but now it is said all over the country. This impacts me because I listen to it before some sporting events or even pep rally's. This connects to now because men for example take their hats off while the star spangled banner is sang as a sign of respect.
The Monkey Trials began on July 10, 1925. It happened because Tennessee was angry with a teacher teaching evolution. This impacted the nation because back then that was a misdemeanor with a fine but now I have been told a couple things about evolution. This impacts me because this just new information I never knew before. This connects to now because most people know a little something about evolution and I believe there are even some classes you can take on the concept of evolution.
The first Mickey Mouse came out in newspapers on January 13, 1930. It was by far the most popular character Disney had ever made. This impacts the nation because there were earlier visions of it than now. It also shows that the nation loved Mickey Mouse cartoons a lot! This impacts me because I remember watching the black and white Mickey Mouse shorts as a child. This connects to now because there a full color Mickey Mouse now. It comes to show how much Disney has edited and upgraded this cartoon.
World War 1 was fought between the central and allied powers. It lasted four years (1914-1918) and resulted in many deaths. This war impacted the nation because at first we were "standing on the sidelines" then in February 1917 we entered the war. This impacts me because it makes me wonder why we entered the war?? And, this connects to now because there are still wars that take place today, but I don't think they are near as bad as this one.
The Kodak Brownie camera was thought to be the best of its time. Although it was made out a black cardboard box. It was sold for 15 cents. The camera impacted the nation because it gave civilians another way to save memories and fun times. This impacted me because I use camera now and looking back at this camera is very different. This connects to the present because the camera is a lot smaller and manageable.
On June 9, 1919 Congress allowed women to vote. This impacted the nation because rights that were once held only to men were now being given to women. this impacted me because it makes me think what if I wasn't able to vote 2-3 years from now. This event connects to now because women are still given rights to vote today and they also have the right to speak their minds.
On November 17, 1916, Jeanette Rankin's was the first woman elected into office (house of representatives). This person and event had a huge impact on our nation, for it gave women more hope for there rights (voting rights). This impacted me because I've always been interested in the advance of women rights and I never knew about the first women elected into office. And this obviously impacts present day because we have women running for president and more women in the house of representatives.
The great depression was a period between 1929-1939. This period of time greatly impacted the nation because it was a period of time where over 15 million people were unemployed. Consumers weren't doing what they had been causing the economy to fail. This period of time impacted me because it makes me think about how much this affected us. Then look around and see where we are after it happened. This event connects to present day because there are still unemployed people, not 15 million though, and there are still financially unstable civilians.
