Democrats want popular votes to elect president, however, Republicans don't. Many argue that this electoral college need to go because it is so outdated and unfair. many states have made a pact that they will vote for the national popular votes and not the state's. the arrangement is that the college give big states more domination.
Geography, combined with the oaths electors must take, rendered the Electoral College totally pointless long ago. A long time ago the electoral college became a thing because of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Lately people are very fed up about this because the electoral college is bring some states to the top. most states have very few electors so those states that have many electors have dominance over the other states. this creates an unfair advantage for because sometimes the electors vote because of popular vote.
Hillary Clinton lost the presidency, but very likely won the popular vote. its been 16 years since democrats have won more votes than republicans. this is because the electoral college sometimes votes for their state's political standing. most states are republican, this gives republican running presidents more of a chance to become president. Democrats would like to stand up for themselves but they have absolutely no power and no control. they almost got the electoral college abolished in 1934 but lost by two votes. they should redo that campaign and recount the votes.
only five times in history, a president won that wasn't the most popular. Because of the electoral college, the people of the united states don't think there votes matter. this is especially when presidents like trump get elected who were not winner of popular vote. The electoral college is making people even more angrier than usual. the electoral college should be abolished so everybody's vote does actually matter.
Only certain states get tons of electors making those the only states that count towards the presidential election. this cartoon shows how Ohio (one of the most important states when it becomes to voting) is one of the depending factors on who becomes presidency. some states like ohio give the majority of the votes so other states dont matter. many states (especially this year) get mad about the majority vote of the electors in the bigger states. These small states, however, cant do anything about it because they may only get 2-3 votes. Every vote should count.
