An interview with Lila Rose, Founder of pro life organization, Live Action, reveals what inspired her to start her organization at the young age of 15. Coming from a family of eight, she had been raised to value life as something precious and important. " We're made in the image and likeness of God and my faith is everything to me." At age 9, she found a book called Handbook on Abortion. She states she was shocked to see a child 10 weeks old, killed by first trimester suction abortion. She remembers being curious and stunned, wanting to ask her mom questions she was concerned about. Rose learned over 3000 children die every day in the US alone. She went to UCLA, where she started investigative journalism about the abortion industry, making educational videos exposing what abortion is. She recently launched campaign, Abortionprocedures.com ,with videos of actual abortion procedures with the message " Anybody can change, no matter where you've been.
Donna Quinn, a pro choice nun, made the news and brought about controversy by offering her service and helping at a clinic that provides abortions. Raised in Canaryville, Quinn still recognizes herself as a nun and belongs to a community called Sinsinawa. She also points out that she refuses to use the name " Sister" because she sincerely believes that everyone is sisters in the women's movement. Instead she calls herself " as first of all a feminist and an activist, someone who loves people, works for justice." She realized she could have easily turned her back on the church but recognizes that her voice is more powerful from the inside. Her opinion on abortion is that it is the woman decision on what she wants to do with her baby. And specifically on late term abortions, " I think if you respect a woman, whenever she chooses for this unplanned pregnancy, whatever is her choice, is my choice."
Abortion activists celebrate the courtroom battle won against the Trump administration regarding a 17 year old's abortion. The undocumented teen came into the country illegally, staying at a federally funded shelter in Texas. A couple weeks ago, she told this shelter she wanted to abort her unborn baby but they refused. ACLU sued and won the legal court battle, allowing the 16 week old baby to be aborted. Micaiah Bilger points out that at 16 weeks, the unborn baby had a heartbeat, brainwaves, functioning organs, taste buds, its own fingerprint, and was most likely already yawning and sucking his or her thumb. Bilger states that the fetus undoubtedly experienced extreme pain as it is common with a second trimester abortion, where they take the unborn baby apart limb by limb. While abortion activists celebrate, Bilger is horrified by the joy that they have from killing an unborn baby. '"They just seem to care that the woman has been "freed" from the "burden" of a child- and that freedom can only come by destroying the unborn child's life, in their minds."" He also points out studies have revealed that women who choose to have an abortion have an increased risk of psychological effects like anxiety, depression, and suicide in the aftermath of their decision. Also, there can be physical effects like breast cancer and future preterm births. " Killing a living human being should never be a human right or cause for celebration.
Thomas L. Friedman argues, " Pro life can only mean one thing; respect for the sanctity of life." Various far right wing conservatives and politicians are against abortion even in the case of rape because they believe life is seen as a gift of god, so he planned it that way. These politicians are confident in their opinion that abortion should never, ever be legal, even when the mother's life is in danger. Friedman states that those who decide to abort their baby should be treated with just as much respect as those who believe it is wrong to take another human being's life. He reiterates that pro life isn;t just about abortion, it apllies to laws against gun control, which helps keep our country safe. It applies to the Environmental Protection Agency, an organization to help keep America clean and pollution free. It applies to Head Start, another organization helping children at a disadvantage have access to basic needs like good education, health, and nutrition. Pro life means higher quality of life, not just in the womb, but your whole lifetime. In his opinion, the most Pro life politician is Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the New York City mayor. He believes in women getting the choice of whether or not they abort their baby, he has put a ban on smoking in bars and parks, in hopes to bring down the amount of people affected by cancer and other diseases, requires restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus to help people make healthy decisions about what they eat, and much more. Friedman believes "Respect for the sanctity of life, if you believe that it begins at conception, cannot end at birth. "
A twitter thread that started with a simple question has caused an out roar from both sides of the debate about abortion. Journalist Patricks Tomlinson came up with a scenario where you are in a fire, and have the choice to save a five year old child or 1000 human embryos. He points out that people against abortion have never gave an honest answer to this. He called into question one of the well known ideas " pro lifers" support, that life begins at conception , and furthermore, and embryo has the same value as a living human child. One of the many people that argued back challenged this by saying, they would take the embryos and save 1000 people instead of just saving one, calling it a " no brainer." Tomlinson fired back by saying, " Thank you for your honesty about being an amoral monster who should never be allowed around children. That was very brave of you." He adds, " A human child is worth more than a thousand embryos. Or ten thousand. Or a million. Because they are not the same, not morally, not ethically, not biologically."
Alice Driver, a journalist reports on a project involving women inmates in an El Salvador prison because of having an abortion or miscarriage. Abortion, even in cases of rape, incest, the life of the mother, or miscarriage is illegal there, and has serious repercussions like years in prison and other criminal penalties. Because it is more common for poor women to have a miscarriage and be charged with aggravated homicide, they are the ones that end up in jail, instead of supporting their family or making a living. El Salvador has a introduced a new law that allows rapists to marry the girls they raped. One particular example of this that made the news was when a twelve year old forced to marry a thirty four year old man. El Salvador has the highest rates of teen pregnancy in Latin america and more than one third of all pregnancies there are teens ages 10-19. Morena Herrera," founder and president of the Citizen's Group for the Decriminalization of Abortion" points out the psycological damage a woman can carry with her when she's forced to have her child after rape and incest, or if the child is dead or deformed. " The problem is that abortion isn't understood as human rights, public health, or social justice issue." She argued.
