The contamination in the air has affected more than just people. It has affected the environment and reduced food production. "Poor air quality is a direct cause of reducing the amount of crops produced. Pollution reduces tree growth and affects lumber production and forest maturity. Soil contamination of lead and other pollutants can affect functionality of the soil itself and can run off into waterways contaminating food and drinking water." Poor air quality has caused food and water for people to be dangerous to consume. This matters because if there was good air quality, then at least "$500 million dollars worth of crops that could have been grown," which could have benefited the government as well as the people.
Air pollution has become a major environmental health problem. It is causing deaths to a large population of people. In 2012, the World Health Organization estimated that "72% of outdoor air pollution-related premature deaths were due to ischaemic heart disease and strokes." Air pollution has become a serious matter and the government needs to do something about it in order to protect the citizens. This matters because the government can provide urban transit, paths for walking and cycling in the cities, adding solar panels to houses, and recycling in order to regulate air pollution.
The pollution in the air has affected children as well. Air pollution could be one factor as to why children are diagnosed with attention problems. "A new study looks at how unborn children exposed to high levels of pollutants in car exhaust are five times more likely to develop an attention disorder by age 9." If the contamination in the air is not cleaned, then more and more children will soon develop disorders like autism. This matters because this should be a sign to the government that they need to step in and fix this issue before more citizens are harmed due to air pollution.
Air pollution is caused by a lot of substances. Some include the burning of fossil fuels, such as petroleum used in traffic, and tobacco smoke. Because of this, people are affected by "asthma and changes in lung function, cardiovascular diseases, adverse pregnancy outcomes (such as preterm birth), and even death." Air pollution is putting people's lives at risk. This matters because if there is poor air quality, then that will increase temperatures, which then can affect people's hearts. Air pollution play in the development of many citizen's illnesses.
People are mostly the ones that cause pollution in the air. Because of this, they are harming themselves and don't know how to fix it. Industrialized countries have tried to reduce smog and smoke to improve people's health. However, "not predicted until recently, is that the lower sulfur dioxide levels may actually make global warming worse." If people reduce the amount of smog in the air, it will cause global warming, which is another harm to citizens. This matters because the government needs to take action, for example, putting higher taxes on gasoline so that people will be encouraged to pollute less.
