My friends have been a huge part of my life and have helped shape me into who I am today. As all students know, school can be extremely stressful and overwhelming. I have always had such awesome friends to reply on and be there for me when I need to vent or simply have a quick chat during stressful times. I hope all the relationships I have built throughout the years are maintained once we all begin our careers across Manitoba. "True friendship isn't about being there when it's convenient; it's about being there when it's not."
YouTube has recently become a very helpful teaching tool during all of my placements. Whether I am seeking information on how to create something for my students or using a YouTube video as an activator in my classroom it has been and will always be very important to me. I also find this tool very easy and fast to use on my laptop or smartphone. Although you have to filter through a lot of not so helpful videos I always seem to find one that fits perfectly.
Brandon University has been a huge part of my life for the past 4 years. I completed my 3 year physical education degree and am now entering my last year in the faculty of education. Having to pick up and move from Dauphin to Brandon in 2013 was an eye opening and life changing experience. I attended Assiniboine Community College in Dauphin for 1 year and was enrolled for the fall of 2013 in order to receive my Business Communications diploma. I realized only a few weeks before starting my last year at ACC that I was unhappy and wanted to pursue my lifelong dream, which has been to work with children. In order to become a teacher I had to pick up and instantly move to Brandon. I am extremely happy with the decision that I made and cannot wait to start teaching in the fall of 2018. I hope to come back to Brandon University to take my masters, after starting my family and taking a small well deserved break from school.
Scholar's Choice is one store that is turning into my favourite. I have never actually been in a Scholar's Choice but I have looked a lot online and believe that I will be spending a lot of money there as my teaching career unfolds. As a teacher, it is important to have access to manipulatives, books, charts and other new ideas, I think that by changing things in your classroom or having more options for students keeps them engaged. "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid." ~Albert Einstein
The Manitoba Curriculum has been a vital asset to me since I began my Education degree. This is a resource that is a necessity to teach in Manitoba and one should familiarize themselves with it before taking on their own class. The curriculum not only has the guidelines we, as a teacher need to follow but also numerous ideas for all of the subject areas. A great tool I have utilized for ELA is Blackline Masters, this is a great resource and I plan to become more familiar with it as my teaching career takes off.
Go Noodle is a resource based on classroom movement breaks. I have had a couple professors that strongly believe movement breaks are vital. This is one site I have never actually utilized in my placements but I am confident it will become very important in my future. I believe movement breaks are vital to keep students on the task at hand, I can't wait to try some of the dances with my future classrooms.
Kahoot! is a game-based platform that makes learning awesome for millions of people all over the world. You can sign up for free and it is easy to get started! In October of 2016 I took a professional development about Kahoot at Brandon's LIFT. I have used Kahoot in one placement and plan to utilize it in my upcoming grade 5 placement. When I used it as an activator the students LOVED it an asked daily if we could use it more often. My cooperating teacher continued to use Kahoot with her class after I left as a pre and post assessment. It allows you to do a very quick assessment on each student based on how many answers they answer correctly in the quiz.
~Mountain View School Division will provide an inspiring, respectful and safe learning environment where every student is valued, nurtured and enabled to realize his/her full potential.~ Mountain View School Division includes Dauphin and the surrounding area. I grew up 30 minutes North of Dauphin and attended elementary and high school in Winnipegosis, Manitoba. Winnipegosis is the furthest North that the Mountain View division goes. I now reside in Gilbert Plains, very close to Dauphin. Gilbert Plains is surrounded by schools that fall into this division. I completed my first placement in Mountain View and will be finishing off the last two placements of my education degree there. I have attended a professional development day at the school division office and have got to meet a few of the coaches. It was a requirement for my first placement to make an appointment with the PD center, I am very happy I got this opportunity. I loved my time there and found so many useful tools that I definitely plan to use in my future classroom. I hope to get a job in the Mountain View School Division next fall in an early or middle years classroom.
Before starting at Brandon University I had never heard of Teachers Pay Teachers. This tool has been my GO TO almost daily! I use this site to find teaching ideas on different subjects and grades. At times I simply look through the different categories to familiarize myself with the grade I am teaching. I believe that teachers should work smarter, not harder and this app is a great example of that. Teachers share creations or lesson plans that have worked well for them for other teachers around the world to buy. I think every new teacher should familiarize themselves with this site because I have learned a lot from it!
Pinterest is a free website that requires registration to use. Users can upload, save, sort, and manage images, called pins. Users can also create boards, this is basically a group of ideas that relate to each other. When I first used Pinterest I browsed through a few pages and avoided the app for over a year. I never really started loving Pinterest until I started Education and needed some teaching manipulative ideas, I now turn to it almost daily! I love creating cute household decorations or holiday decorations with my step son. I am confident that I will continue to use Pinterest as my teaching career takes off.
