The ancient Egyptian writing is called Hieroglyphic writing. There are two main characteristics in Hieroglyphic writing. Object are drawn as ideograms or pictures, and the picture symbols have the sound/phonetics, the value of the words represented by the objects. Hieroglyphs are not just pictures. They could be spoken, just like words written in an alphabet such as English. A written text normally has three types of hieroglyphs. Ideograms are read as the words they represent; phonograms are symbols that do not refer to the things that they picture: they just stand for one or more consonants, which doesn't have phonetic value but helps the reader to decide the right meaning of the text. This website fits into my collection because it is about ancient Egyptian writing which is one of the most oldest writings. Also, this is under my theme of Ancient Writings. Cuneiform was the most common and historically great writing system of the ancient Middle East. However it was not a language. It was a picure-writing system that used signs, similar to the Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Chinese system of ideograms. The Sumerians of Southern Mesopotamia wrote the earliest known documents in cuneiform. This writing system was in use at least by the end of the 4th millennium BC and during the 3rd millennium the drawings that were used came to be quite standardized linear pictures. A stylus was used to press these drawings into soft clay tablets, and because of that they came to have a wedge-shaped look. This website fits into my collection because it is about ancient Cuneiform writing and this is under my theme of Ancient Writings. Cuneiform writing is also one of the oldest writings. Possibly, the most tremendous contribution of the Phoenicians was a syllabic form of writing that emerged in approximately a thousand bc at Byblos. The Greek phrase biblia (books) and the English phrase Bible came from this city's name. This form of writing, consisting of twenty-two characters, become unfold via the Phoenicians of their travels and encouraged the Aramaic and Greek alphabets. Chinese writing emerged from divination rites in 1200 BCE. It seems to have risen by its self since there is no proof of cultural transference at this time between China and Mesopotamia. The practice of divination in China included etching marks on bones or shells which were heated afterwards until they cracked. The cracks were then interpreted by a Diviner. The image is shows the earliest known form of Chinese writing on a tortoise shell.
