This article recognizes several opposing viewpoints about my stance on this matter. It discusses the benefits of going vegan through weight loss. The author references several studies that have proven that people on a vegetarian/vegan diet lost more weight than someone on an omnivorous, animal based protein, diet (Zaraska). Even though these studies are true, the author didn’t recognize the health risks of going vegan. Though a vegan diet may allow you to lose weight faster, that doesn’t mean that it was the healthier way to lose weight. This podcast explains the ways that a vegan diet can be done correctly, through supplementation, which in reality is "very hard to perfect" (Chris Kresser) You can supplement for omega-3 fatty acids by consuming micro-algae, which contains DHA (Chris Kresser), but you will only be able to get the benefits of this super food in enormous quantities. There are also other forms of supplementation, but none of it amounts to near as much as the original source does, and by cutting down on the animal proteins and nutrients, you're limiting yourself to these benefits. The position that I hold in regard to the consumption of strictly plant-based food, is plain and simple, I don't support it, especially after reading this article. It isn't beneficial for the human body, and in a majority of the cases, it is actually quite harmful and destructive. This article by, Danelle Wolford explains that "plants can provide many good vitamins & minerals. But when we try to obtain all of our nutrition from plants, it eventually leads to deficiencies" (Wolford). Which basically means that vegetables and fruits that come from plants are very healthy, but if they are only eaten by themselves, they aren't very beneficial because they cannot provide enough of the nutrients humans need to survive. Cellulose is a type of fiber found in all plants, something we as humans cannot digest, and as a result of this inability to break down the cellulose, humans aren't able to absorb plant proteins. The article claims that animal protein is not the cause of cancer. The author debunks the book "The China Study", which is basically "a bible for vegans" (Wolford), that describes how meat and dairy are harmful. Which isn't true, as explained in the article "there are many, many variables that can cause cancer and it is wrong of Dr. Campbell to choose animal protein as the culprit. Other variables that correlate positively with cancer are high consumption of beer & liquor, high refined sugar & starch consumption, high hydrogenated fat consumption, tobacco consumption, & environmental factors." (Wolford) It was wrong for Dr. Campbell to blame meat as the sole factor, and it has mislead so many people to become vegan. The nutritional deficits of going vegan don't only harm you... but they are also a possible threat to future children, if you plan on conceiving. In this article, Liz Szabo examines a study that states "pregnant women who don't get enough vitamin B-12 may have a greater risk of delivering a baby with birth defects." (Szabo). According to this study, women who have lower B-12 rates are five times more likely to give birth to defected babies (Szabo). The only way that a mother can obtain this vitamin is through the consumption of animal protein. Vitamin B-12 is an essential component in the development and formation of the neural tube, which helps develop the brain and spinal cord, without it, babies may be born with spina bifida, resulting in spinal paralysis. This is a cross sectional analysis of the plasma concentrations and intakes of amino acids in male meat-eaters, fish-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. The results of this analysis show that "concentrations of methionine, tryptophan and tyrosine were highest in fish-eaters and vegetarians, followed by meat-eaters, and lowest in vegans." (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition) The effects of this information help support my position that you cannot get the proper nutritional balance without the consumption of animal protein. Methionine is an amino acid found in fish and meat, without it liver damage, muscle loss, edema, skin lesions, and lethargy will result. Tryptophan is an amino acid found in turkey that changes into a hormone called serotonin which has a strong link to your moods. Tyrosine is an amino acid found in meat that makes another amino acid called phenylalanine which aid in the production of several brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, that help with the sense of pain and heat. Without these vital amino acids vegans are at risk to the inability to properly digest food. Nina Planck wrote this article in response to a 6-week-old baby who died as a result of starvation due to being vegan and not getting the proper nutrients he needed to grow while in the womb. In this article, she explains that babies who were born from vegan mothers are malnourished (Planck). Animal protein is an essential component in development and although you can get proteins from soy and other plants, these proteins are inferior in quality and quantity to animal protein. “Babies are built from protein, calcium, cholesterol, and fish oil.
