In the book “Brave New World” and movie “The Matrix” they explore the choice between happiness and the truth. In the movie Morpheus tells Neo to make a choice between two pills “Take the blue pill and the story ends here. You awake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.” then he says, “You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” Morpheus is offering a choice between life as usual, and knowing the truth. What he means by ‘life as usual’ is a life full of ignorant happiness which is no life at all. Not knowing the truth is one of the most foolish things anyone could do because all one would ever know is lies leading to hyper controlling situations, with very few people who are left to think for themselves surrounded by a society that blindly follows orders as long as their ‘happy’. No matter if that happiness comes from someone else or even from a drug like soma in Brave New World. In Brave New World, the Savage leaves his reservation to come to London so he can be a part of this pristine society with his mother. But what he comes to learn is that this ‘perfect’ society is full of people who run from their problems for a living and never express any real feelings. When talking to the Controller he is told that “One can’t have something for nothing. Happiness has got to be paid for.” Only later on does he realize that these people are paying for their happiness by giving up the truth, the truth of life. By not knowing the truth these people have ignorantly submitted themselves to a life of fake happiness because you can’t truly be happy unless one can connect emotionally and physically. Today big corporations like Facebook are trying to persuade us into believing what they want us to believe by tailoring the adds people see and filtering others content to make us want what they have, while we turn a blind eye. So between the choice of the red or blue pill, or the choice between truth and happiness one must always know the truth if to have hope of being happy.
