This photo shows the large white billowing eruption plume from Rabaul being carried in a westerly direction by the weak prevailing winds. Because of the huge eruption there is a lot of rain, lighting and thunder. This is because the ash particle are thrown into the atmosphere and collect water droplets in them. Another problem with eruptions is volcanic fog or "vog." The volcanic fog contains a lot of sulfur dioxide. That SO2 combines with water in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid droplets the get carried around slowly by the winds.As for the world-wide affects of volcanic eruptions this only happens when there are large explosive eruptions that throw material into the stratosphere. If it only gets into the troposphere it gets flushed out by rain.

These can describe the weather in a certain place as well, but while the weather can change in just a few hours, climate changes over a longer span of time. Earth global climate is an average of regional climates. Even thought the climate warmed and cooled in history recently it has gotten unusually warm.

Some parts of the Earth are hot and dry like Death valley in California, while others are very wet like the Cropp river in New Zealand. The climate always depends on the regions climate system. The climate system has five major components, those being the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the cryosphere, the land surface, and the biosphere. The atmosphere is the most variable part of the system. The movement and composition of gasses surrounding Earth can change unexpectedly, due to natural and man made factors. Changes to the hydrosphere, which include variations in temperature and salinity, occur at much slower rates than changes to the atmosphere.
Every planet in space has an atmosphere, a gas layer that surrounds the plant. The reason Earths climate is so moderate and can sustain life is because our atmosphere is made up of nitrogen and oxygen. They protect us from the suns radiation and without them we would not be alive. The gases in the atmosphere that help retain heat are called greenhouse gases. These gasses which are mostly carbon dioxide absorb the heat making it a hospitable place. Its not all a good thing as co2 levels have been raising due to humans burning things like oil, fossil fuels, and natural gas. The co2 levels in the atmosphere has increased by 8% in the past 25 years. If the atmosphere didnt absorb these gasses this would not happen.
