The park got its name from a Native American legend. In the 1760s, Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe, was attending a tribal council meeting.
The native american's have lived within the park since 8000bc. the first inhabits were called the Achaic Indians. Through the centuries, Woodland, Hopewellian, and Mississippi Indian cultures have flourished in this area.
