Despite no official word from the province on how it plans to manage the sale of recreational cannabis come October, private retailers are flocking to Ontario to set up shop. "Ontario is a frenzy right now in terms of entrepreneurs, real estate developers — anybody within the cannabis infrastructure," said David Martyn, president of Starbuds Canada and Compass Cannabis Clinic. "The level of anticipation that's building up is massive right now."
Peace By Chocolate now employs 25 people and is in the process of hiring 25 more to keep up with demand.
The Parkdale institution was founded by Sheldon Fainer and his wife, Beverly. Fainer, who immigrated to Canada from Poland in the 1950s, says the couple are retiring.
A group of Parkdale residents is fighting what it calls an "arrogant, abrasive, divisive" rebranding of the neighbourhood by a collection of local vegan businesses.
"We have two hundred and sixty of the greatest brewers anywhere in the world. My friends, we are going to do our part because a buck a beer is coming to a shelf near you," Ford said.
