On May 7, 1992 the 27th Amendment was ratified. This is the most recent amendment to be ratified and it states: “No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of representatives shall have intervened.” This was a topic of debate becuase Benjamin Franklin originally stated that those who hold office should be public servants and not be paid a high amount. They also did not want co goes to have power over their own pay with out limitation. They wanted the election to happen first so that any greedy people in congress could be elected out by the public during the reelection process.
This is an example of the congress’s power being kept in check by the other branches. Making sure that those in congress do not have too much power over their own pay which could led greed and corruption.
Trump has been trying to put a travel and visa ban on Muslims traveling into our country. Trump has been actively pushing and pursuing the passage of this law but he has hit a standstill. Not everyone in the government is on the same page or has the same passion for the international ban. Due to that the other government leaders and parties are not allowing Trump's bans to pass.
Here we have an example of the President's power being kept in check. Showing that the executive branch does not always have the final say and definitely does not have absolute power. I think this is important because if any branch had too much power our governmental system would fall apart. In this case there could be a complete ban on anyone of culture traveling into our country which is not fair for a multitude of reasons. With out the influence of other countries our businesses and economy would struggle.
In 1998 the Legislative branch tried to impeach President Clinton on 11 grounds. These grounds included but were not limited to perjury, witness tampering, abuse of power, and obstruction of justice. This was brought to light and imposed on Clinton due to his affair with Monica Lewinsky. William Renquist, the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court at the time, was sworn into preside and the Senate was sworn in as jurors for the case. The case did not get enough votes to impeach Clinton but this was the first time since 1868, with Andrew Jackson, that there was an impeachment trial for a president.
This is an example of the Legislative Branch keeping the Executive Branch in check. Ensuring that the president abides by the proper rules and regulations. With out this the president could act how ever they felt lead to and would have to consequences, no one to keep them in line.
In Texas there was the HB2 law passed which caused many abortion clinics to shut down. This left many women in Texas impossible distances away from clinics, even for rape victims and those whose lives were at risk due to being pregnant. Many women viewed this as unfair and unconstitutional so they took this case to court. It made it all the way up to the supreme court and surpassed all texas rulings. The supreme court ruled in favor of removing the HB2 legislation and made it so more clinics can be available. There are many mixed emotions over this ruling in Texas right now, Pro - Choice advocates are thrilled with the ruling while Pro-Life advocates are not as happy and have vowed to continue to fight against abortion.
Here we have the Supreme Court keeping state court in check. They are making sure that women rights are not being violated and that all women have equal access to clinics. They are also making sure that the Texas government does not over step their boundaries.
