The Gedanken thought is about a story from Ancient Egypt, an describes cleopatras death. The story goes that Cleopatra was in her mausoleum and wrote her suicide note, which she gave to a guard and orderd him to give it to Octavian. Soon after, Cleopatra held a snake, known as the Asp which apparently bites Cleopatra on the breast.
In the Temple of Filé, there is a carving of Isis surrounded by a snake. This carving has a connection to Cleopatra. She was believed to be the living reincarnation of Isis, and that her destiny was intwined with the serpent. This could mean that the Asp was actually a snake sent from Isis, a protective goddess in Egyptian mythology.
Cleopatra was determined that she would not be paraded through the streets of Rome before being executed in a triumph and so she began to test poisons on condemned prisoners to see which would kill her the fastest. Deciding that the fast poisons were too painful and the least painful were too slow she turned to animal venoms. She then settled with the venom of an Asp. Before she would allow the Asp to bite her, Cleopatra made sure that she left instructions about her mummification when the time came.
More recent studies suggests that Cleopatra died from a drug cocktail and not a snake bite. According to Christoph Schafer, the Egyptians actually new about poisons and Cleopatra actually tested them.Schafer believes that she chose a poisonous cocktail made of opium, wolfsbane and hemlock. However, such a poison would've been tested by someone else in Cleopatras palace, not by her own hand.
