The amount of money a college player would receive depends on many things. Martinez says that football and basketball bring in the most money so that means other sports such as baseball, who don't pull in as much money would be payed less. The question asked is if this is fair, and according to the market it is. Martinez says, “Coaches receive bonuses for breaking records, reaching the offseason, and winning the big games; the athletes receive none of it,”. Is it really fair that these coaches get these fat paychecks while the players get none?
College athletes receive many benefits, but should financial compensation be one of them? Again this article is more of a list of pros and cons, but seems to have more specific examples than others i have read. The author, Patterson explains how college athletes put their bodies on the line every time they play and uses Kevin Ware as an example of this. “In the 2013 NCAA tournament Louisville player Kevin Ware suffered a horrific injury to his lower right leg” If you don't know who Ware is and what happened to him just simply google him and you will know what the author is talking about. The other side explains that the education and experiences they receive is payment enough.
Should college athletes be paid? Matt Lemmons gives us a list and an interesting statistics on this. He talks about race and says, “If a majority of these college athletes, who are bringing in staggering amounts of money to these schools were white, would this even be a conversation?” I did not know a majority of white americans opposed paying college athletes and a majority of black americans supported it. He then shares a list of pros and cons of paying our athletes. Some cons include unfair compensation and lack of focus in the classroom, and some pros include supporting their families and receiving just compensation.
This article is very similar to the previous one. The FBI has found many cases of bribery in college basketball recruitment. The name mentioned right in the beginning is Rick Pitino. He is a well known coach but he does have his share of baggage. They accuse these coaches like Rick of pressuring specific player to sign to certain agents and contracts with sponsors. Adidas is now in hot water as they were the company getting the contracts with players.
The FBI is investigating multiple schools and their coaches for what seems to be a huge recruiting scandal and will result in jail time for many. ¨The former NBA player and assistant coach lied to one family¨ , said Johnson and Dator. This just shows you that these coaches are not looking out for the players but for themselves instead. Many of these kids are the first in their family to experience and attend college so it is easy for them to get swindled into these raw deals
