Here’s why scientists have been fertilizing the Arctic

Scientists in the Arctic, are trying to get things to grow. A big issue is temperature, which is freezing for most of the year rendering the arctic only habitable for 3 months of the year. Nitrogen and phosphorus are also necessary nutrients for plants to survive, and their lacking in the soil because of the frigid temperature. Scientist solved this by adding fertilizer, which was promising better results from the plants. This problem also applied to fish and the water they swim in, which is frozen most of the time.

Wacky winter dumps snow on every single U.S. state

Near the end of winter, a huge snowstorm sets across the continental U.S. and sets record lows for many states. What happened is that a jet of arctic air came into the jet stream for the gulf of mexico and gave the U.S freezing temperatures in december. In January more cold winter snow storms impact the states once again, which gave us our snow in december, and frozen temperatures come january.

In Antarctica, ninety - one volcanoes have been discovered, mostly over the mary byrd land. This discovery is most likely a bad sign, as the heat from the volcanoes can melt the ice sheets above. These volcanoes have been found to be recently active, though these newly discovered volcanoes could be good as they might act as road bumps for moving ice sheets to cave into the sea.

Climate change drives collapse in marine food webs

A study at the University of Adelaide, found that increased temperatures lead to an instability in food chains. What the scientists did is put marine life (algae, fish, shrimp, etc.) into a 1,600 liter tank and found out that when temperatures were increased and garbage was put in, the food chain began to slow. This research could better help us find out how ecosystems in the real world may act under harsher, and warmer conditions.
