One of the most amazing things about a democracy is the inclusion of people from all walks of life with varying beliefs. If there is anything less than 100% tolerance for religion, then we are contradicting the idea of total inclusion. Religious tolerance should be a no-brainer in this society where everyone's opinion is valued. Religion is something personal and important to individuals and if people feel like they cannot openly observe their customs, then they will feel unsafe in their homeland. With the racism around muslims and verifying middle eastern religions, innocent men ad women have been stopped in airports because of their headdresses. This kind of intolerance creates a hostile environment where people are afraid to express their values. Religious tolerance is a partner in creating an effective democracy.
A fair and just judicial system is another important part of democracy. We need unbiased and intelligent judges to bring justice to those who have been wronged. This is crucial in order to keep society in line. It is also important that people feel they are receiving justice for crimes committed against them. People need to feel safe to contribute to a community and speak their truth and the judicial system makes sure of it. People also need to feel that the court provides an outlet for real change. In the recent case of gay marriage, real change was made to expand the rights of homosexuals, something many conservatives have problems with. The fact that that specific hurdle could be jumped is major in showing the influence in justice lying in the judicial system.
Local government is a valuable piece that makes up larger democratic federal governments. Through local governments, people can voice their opinions in a smaller arena and can work to address issues at home. Local governments provide an outlet for discussions that are crucial to the democratic system of including many voices. Something like town hall meetings might seem small and inefficient, when really they create a vital connection between the government and its citizens. It is important not to take that outlet for granted.
It is a true sign of security in our democracy that journalists can make fun of the government without fearing negative retribution. Freedom of the press is important in the survival of our democracy. This speaks to the concept of freedom of the press to voice their critiques. There is a reason why University of California Berkeley is so hallowed for being the birthplace of the free speech movement, it's because free speech is more valuable than any particular class one could ever take. It allows people to speak out against their government and the wrongs of society without fearing retribution. Newspapers and reporters have a responsibility in this free land to relay information no matter how it makes the government appear, and that is truly a gift.
A key pillar of democracies most clearly lies in the representation of all. The passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments took a step towards this. While even after this point equality fro African Americans was far from perfect, this was a step towards a complete democracy which includes every one of its citizens and represents their interests. In recent years, voter turnout has been remarkably low. It is shocking that in a country that allows its citizens the decision which officials to elect, most people do not even feel the need to participate and exercise their right. It is Important that people feel safe going to voting polls and understand their obligation to their government.
The annual White House Correspondents Dinner is typically attended by the president, but for the first time in over thirty years, the President did not attend. This is a bigger deal than it may appear. The president typically shows up and graciously accepts being "roasted" and other well-meaning jokes. Trump's lack of attendance shows the insecurity in power. In a democracy, it is important for our leaders to feel secure in their positions to effectively demand respect and command power.
A large part of democracy is a working community. We make decisions and take action to make our democracy work. Every person is vital in pursuing equality. While the painting depicts a woman pleading for the man not to leave, his departure, most likely to go fight in the American revolution, is a crucial part of society. Everyone must make sacrifices to preserve the democracy.
