This is mainly because everything back during the days before Japanese Occupation were all affordable even for the poor families.

This website also shows how growing of crops due to lack of food and money led to diseases spread around in Singapore affecting even more of their daily lives.
Gay World was one of three amusement parks built in Singapore before World War II and around which Singapore’s night life revolved from the 1920s to the 1960s. The other two were New World and Great World. Gay World was then changed into gambling dens during the Japanese Occupation and it attracted many gamblers.
