There are benefits of student's being athletes.Howell Wechsler, director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health for the Centers for Disease Control looked at 50 students and the effect that physical activity has on students. Half of students had positive results.Fitter kids scored nearly 30% higher on standardized tests than the non-fit kids. Also, students who play sports can transfer their skills such as leadership or responsibility to the classroom to be a good student. Students have to maintain a certain grade in classes to stay on the team so that gives them motivation so they don't get kicked off the team.
I have wondered if sports effected the grades of students. I found a study done in 1986 that compared the GPA'S of students in sports and students not in sports. The average GPA is 2.67 for someone in athletics. The average GPA of a student not in sports was surprisingly 2.12. I have wondered the reasons behind why the students on sports teams have higher GPA's. I think it's maybe because the non-athlete students are taking harder classes. It could also be the athletes not wanting to get kicked off the team if there is a minimum GPA or grade you can have.
Some people think college sports should be cut off completely. They say that students have bad grades. If students had trouble in high school with academics why would it be surprising for them to struggle in college too. Researchers even said that the Oregon Ducks winning the Rose Bowl in 2011 didn't just affect the team's grades but the whole country's grades on a final. There's more crazy claims too. Penn State's coach in 2011 was accused of Sexually harassing some of his players. That lead some people to say college sports shouldn't exist at all. Even if players to make it pro, college athletics still allow students to try to follow their sports career dreams.
Lots of colleges offer athletics such as basketball or football for students to play. Students are supposed to have passing grades to be able to play. Even if students have passing grades they might not spend enough time on their work. The average GPA for a student athlete is 2.46 on a 4 point scale. 12% of the athletes have said they have had stress to do good in sports and in academics. A lot of students said they spend about 30 hours a week on sports, though they don't spend enough time on schoolwork. They only spend about 13 hours a week for classes during the season and 15 during the off-season.
