Connection: Bugs as food. This reporter (who is a vegan) wanted to test out the idea of eating bugs as a primary protein source, so she put herself to the test. She confirmed our conversation that bugs are easier to eat when they're hidden in food rather than plain. She found that she was not able to maintain the diet because she kept throwing up the food she was eating or not finishing her plates. She even ended up in the hospital because she was essentially starving herself. She did not end up a convert. I do wonder, though, if a non-vegan would be more successful with this feat because a big part of her hesitation was the loss of life, since you have to kill thousands of insects to make a meal.
Connection: Fast food. This article shows that some of the information from Fast Food Nation is now out of date. The trend of teenagers working in general is now down. Fewer teens are working in order to focus on academics.
Connection: Persuasive Appeals This commercial uses ethos to persuade viewers to use their product. Mark successfully quit smoking with Chantix, so he is a credible source on its effectiveness.
Connection: Parts of an argument In this article, Lenore argues that we are babying our children and that we need to allow them more freedom to learn and experience things. I chose this argument because I liked the way she structured her counterarguments and refutations: she took actual conversations she had with critics and refuted them in writing.
Connection: Blackfish This article talks about how the release of the movie Blackfish initially hurt attendance at SeaWorld, but according to data for this year, they are finally increasing in sales. With that in mind, however; their stock is still down 35% from 2013 when the movie is released. This shows just how significant Blackfish was. Even though SeaWorld has done some things to improve their image, it has taken them 5 years just to START digging their way out of that hole.
Connection: My ___ HIstory This is a really interesting personal article about the author's experience with his name. He details how problematic having the name "Eren" has been for him as a man, and how he has come to accept what his name means to him. This article reminded me of how helpful it can sometimes be to reflect on your own life to see how you've progressed.
Connection: Grammar This person has ISSUES with commas that make me angry. You need to use commas in a list of 3 or more things!
Connection: Membean word In the article, they refer to Kendrick as "introspective" because of the way that he reflects on his experiences in society in his lyrics.
Connection: Logical Fallacy (Scare tactics) Mother Gothel is trying to convince Rapunzel not to go outside because of how scary the world is. While there are some things in the world that are scary, it isn't enough to justify never leaving the house!
Connection: Logical Fallacy (Sentimental appeal) This commercial is trying to make us feel emotionally invested in this puppy. The dog is cute and it's tragic that it gets lost, but at the same time, the dog literally has nothing to do with beer, which is how I know this is sentimental appeal, rather than just an appeal to pathos. It is distracting us from the facts.
