People standby because they don't want to be involved in something that could potentially hurt them. Or they either ignore the fact that someone is being racist or prejudice towards someone. And they could be completely unaware of what is going on. So in which there is injustice that people are letting happen. People who aren't aware of a situation, or aren't affected by it don't know or care enough to help. People who may not be connected to the situation may feel like they have a place to step in and help. For example A girl in Swat Valley, Pakistan was targeted and shot by Taliban for demanding education for girls, because she was trying to help others with their education and nobody helped her she was killed.

World War I caused more damage than any other war before it. 9 million soldiers and as many civilians died in the war. Germany and Russia suffered most, both countries lost almost two million men in battle.
Like other anti-Semitism, Hitler blamed the Jews for the defeat of Germany in World War I, and he also blamed the Jews for Germany's economic crisis after the war, among many other things. Millions of people were victims to Hitler's wrath starting with Jews.
Throughout the 20th century, genocides were perpetrated across the globe. Governments attempted to exterminate entire classes of their citizens based on religion, race, or ethnicity. The main group of citizens that were targeted for injustice was the jewish religion.
Ways that some people in my book were bystanders and not upstanders was when Mahmoud and his family got on a boat and the boat crashed, people we on boats going towards land, they didnt stop and help anyone and drove past them out in the water. Mahmoud had purchased life vests from a young kid and they were fake it made it harder for them to swim. It was very unfair to Mahmoud’s family that nobody helped them, luckily mahmoud's family made to land but they could not find Hanna. And one way that some was an upstander and not a bystander was a lady in Isabelle’s story who gave isabelle's mother pills when she was going into labor.
