The novel, “1984” and the USHMM article, “Culture in the Third Reich: Disseminating the Nazi Worldview”, both analyze how society is an illusion of a perfect utopia and the true intentions of a corrupt government. Winston was captured by the Party and was being tortured in to believing in the Party. O’Brien, the one who was torturing Winston, described the ideal society is when everyone is the same and the Party is “omnipotent” and those who weren’t a part of said society “are outside— irrelevant”. In “1984”, Orwell is pointing out that the government can lie about their intentions and actually just be looking to gain total control of every aspect of people’s lives. The soul of the individual was a territory a totalitarian state aims to claim authority over. In an article called “Was Nazi Evil Unique” the goal was to surround its citizens in an “omnipresent web of surveillance” that took from them not only their public lives, but also their private lives. In, “Culture in the Third Reich: Disseminating the Nazi Worldview”, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum states that Hitler and the Nazis wanted to return Germany to its former cultural traditions and, “regulate, direct, and censor” the basic lives of all citizens and push out the Jews, as they were “degenerate”. For some forms of government, the objective is not to gain obedience, but to gain absolute submission of individuals. As human beings, it’s important to accept differences in communities and rise above the uniform expectations put forth by society.
