Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde

Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde

In her poem " Hanging Fire " Audre Lorde looks back at the hardships and the lack of opportunities that comes with being an African American female that per say a caucasian man will not have to experience . Also she talks about how the perspective of a women , especially an African American women are not always looked upon . Audre writes " I should have been on the math team my marks were better than his ". This shows one example of the fact that even though her physical abilities were better than they boy on the math team , he won due to the simple fact that he is a male. This ties with the common misinterpretation that males are more capable to get the job better than females. She also writes ," Nobody ever stops to think about my side of it ". The most important phrase is " my side of it " . This phrase demonstrates that women/ The female gender are not really listened to especially by men .

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: We should all be feminists

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: We should all be feminists

In her speech , Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talks about and tells stories on the experiences of her growing up in Nigeria and not being treated equally as the Male gender . She believes that there is a major issue with gender today and it needs to be fixed . Chimamanda says , " Then say the realization dawn on Louis face. The man believed that whatever money i had ultimately came from Louis . Because Louis is a man ". This demonstrates the common misconception that the money that a women has is most likely coming from a mans pocket. This also relates to the thought that a man is suppose to work and bring home money while the women stays home , takes care of the house , cooks , and keeps the husband happy. Also Chimamanda says , " but if we start raising children differently, then in fifty years , in a hundred years , boys will no longer have the pressure to prove this masculinity". If society raises children differently in the future there can be a possibility that we can live in a world where the fixed mindsets that people have on gender equality changes.

Girl

Girl

Jamaica Kincaid's short story " Girl " demonstrates that in the presence of men even the ones that you don't know well you must do certain things and " act in such a manner that the female gender should " so you wold not be perceived as a slut by a mans eye . Kincaid writes " always eat your food in such a way that it wont upset someone else stomach ; On Sunday try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are bent on becoming ". This demonstrates that women are expected to act in a specific manner , and if they don't they would be seen in a negative way mostly by men .
