Eric Newby tells his story about how he was an escaped prisoner during a war (it does not say). He was sent from house to house with people who were trying to protect him. They would give him shelter and in return give him work as their slave-laborer. Although many places were very kind to him and kept his presence on the down low, one house turned him in. After the war, he went back to that village and thanked the people who gave him shelter during his escape. The topic came up about the person who turned him in, still nameless. They asked if he wanted to know the name and he simply replied, "‘No, I really don’t. There have been enough accusations and counter-accusations. Just let it be."
"But the father said to his servants . . . And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry." (Luke 15: 22–24) This parable speaks of a son who asks for half of all his father's inheritance and leaves with intentions of becoming something big, but falls short and ends up tending pigs. He returns to his father and pleads that he be hired as a servant. Instead, his father gave him fine robes to replace the rags he once wore and they had a feast celebrating the return of his son.
This poem by the author Shambhavi Singh displays the forgiveness with the hurting side of love and that you are able to bounce back and get through the sorrows of life. The poem is, "Tears rolled down her cheeks, for she was betrayed again. Her heart shrunk, yes. She felt the pain. Deliberately was it done to hurt her. He succeeded. She was broken, but not into a million pieces. Just one part, the part which held her faith. She had lost her trust in love, so she promised to build one again. She wiped off her tears and gently said, 'I FORGIVE YOU'."
In this song, Eminem explicitly expresses his hatred towards his mom. He talks about how he was abused by her and he had to witness her pill addiction at a young age saying, "But put yourself in my position, just try to envision witnessin' your momma poppin' prescription pills in the kitchen." Although he talks about how much it disgusts him about his mother's addiction, he also was able to say that he had forgiven her and apologized for his actions by saying, "I'm sorry, Momma, I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to make you cry."
Eva Kor, now 83 years of age, talks about how she forgives Dr. Josef Mengele, also known as the "Angel of Death". She and her twin sister were taken to Auschwitz and experimented on by the evil doctor. "...You can not forget, but you can live without the pain."
Woody Harrelson states this quote in the movie "Indecent Proposal" that really speaks to the heart on the topic of forgiveness. It states, "I know that the things that people in love do to each other, they remember. And if they stay together, it's not because they forget. It's because they forgive." I really admire it because I find joy in seeing that people are together after a long time of hardships that they fought through with trust in each other and most important, forgiveness.
