From April to August of 2017, several groups of white supremacist, Pro-Trump and Antifa, etc, all had different opinions and raises different conflict between the group. Which eventually lead to a massive fighting and the shutdown of few meetings and speeches, which lead to the anger of many and later lead to a massive fight. A lot of people got involved and several are injured. In contrast to what is presented in Source 2, most people, in this case, think that there should be limited freedom of speech. When the Pro-Trump group came up against the anti-Trump group in Berkeley, they were almost certain to have a fight and some will be injured from it. They think it is correct when the college shut down some of the controversial speeches and meetings, where it prevented the college from getting into more fightings. “There was “no need for a confrontation over a grass patch,” Greenwood said.”
On the second picture, the college student in the picture is wearing a “campus free speech” shirt, but the liberal thought police monkeys covered the student’s senses instead of their own, saying “see no opposing views” “Hear no opposing views” “speak no opposing views”. Which, in another way illustrated that college student was given no freedom of speech.?
In the first picture, free speech on college campuses is described as an unnecessary and almost sissy-like thing to be told. The student on campus is saying “I need a safe place”, where he is definitely much safer than the teenage on a battlefield trying to find a safe place.
In a video of one of the senators’ debates, Mr. Fredric Lawrence talked about how he invited Mr. John Derbyshire to Williams college to give a speech about his political stand. However, within 48 hours they decided to invite Mr. John Derbyshire, the college president canceled the speaker because “he had previously made incendiary comments about African American.” This lead to the anger of Mr. Fredric Lawrence, and the creation of student free speech group. The Congress when through a heated debate from two different senators. In the debate, most people agreed that it is a violation of freedom of speech. Some said that the point of college is to think about different sides of a controversy and have different opinions from different student and speaker. If everything went with what the college president wanted, there is no point in being in college. Another Senator also said that from the information he is given, he thinks that the president of Williams college is not competent for the job and that he should quit, because of the violation of the First Amendment.
In the case, a group of student decided to wear black armbands throughout the holiday to support a truce in the Vietnam war. The school principal prohibited the group from wearing the band because he thinks it materially and substantially interferes the school material. On the next day, Mary Beth Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt wore the same black armbands again and got sent back home two days in a roll. The sue was successful with a result of 7-3. They think that “the school district's actions evidently stemmed from a fear of possible disruption rather than any actual interference.” which means that the school does not have the power to restrict the student from wearing the armband because it is not an actual interference. However, others think that the appearance of the armband could potentially disrupt other students from learning in school. The case is one of the most important and most famous cases that supported more freedom of speech on campuses. “the school district's actions evidently stemmed from a fear of possible disruption rather than any actual interference.”
I chose the topic of Free speech on a college campus. Free speech is a huge controversy in the house of representatives recently. There had been multiple headed debates and supreme court cases about the free speech issue on campuses. No adults would ever want their child to suffer from harmful and malice opinions, like racism, sexism, and microaggression, etc. however, it is difficult to draw a line in this domain, what is allowed to be spoken and what is not. Conservative people tend to think that children are easy to get hurt from what is spoke to them. However, more radical people tend to think that the goal of college is to give a student a broader perspective, and opposing viewpoints, so they tend to crave for more freedom on college campuses. The wrong line drawn could really do a harm to the college environment. People nowadays are still trying to find where the line should be drawn.
