This quote explains that free will is required in order to feel any kind of love or happiness. Free will, or the ability to make decisions about our own path in life, gives people the parameters to make wrong choices. However, without ever making a wrong choice and experiencing the consequences, it is impossible to feel the happiness and joy which comes from goodness. This is seen in Camazotz; true happiness is found in being free to make your own choices.
