FYI EXTRA: Marie Antoinette (Trailer)

Marie Antoinette (2006), starring Kirsten Dunst, was criticized by French critics at Cannes for being too nice to Marie, their infamous, hated queen (and also for using no French actors). However, other reviews were quite favorable, including this bit:

"Marie was a 14-year-old girl taken from her home, stripped bare, and examined like so much horseflesh. Coppola's...point of view shifts the balance away from realism and into an act of empathy for a girl swept up by events that leave her without personal choices. Before she was a queen, before she was a pawn. Therefore, it could be seen as astonishing that the court aristocracy uses her for its pleasure, with indifference for her feelings , and then kills her to dipose of their guilt.

"So, no, the picture is not informative and detailed about the actual politics of the period. That is because we are entirely within Marie's world--in her point of view imagined. And her point of view is contained within Versailles, which shuts out all external reality. It is a self-governing architectural island...that shuts out politics, reality, poverty, society."

Also, it features two of my favorite punk rock bands from high school: BowWowWow and Adam and the Ants. =)

FYI EXTRA: Dangerous Liaisons Trailer

An excellent film (winning 3 Academy Awards) that explores "Stereoype 1" of the pre-Revolutionary French nobles as SO wealthy that they're bored and lazy and decadent and horrible people. | The film is an adaptation of an 18th-century novel. "The Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close) and the Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich) display the petty jealousies and jaded insouciance of life in France's royal court in the 18th century, casually ruining lives. But when actual romantic feelings begin to surface, their games take on a more treacherous air."
