In a study from 1996, it was found that boys and girls both preferred same sex TV characters. They preferred gender typical character traits in chosen characters or when asked which characters they would most like to be and why. This study highlights that children are drawn to and prefer stereotypical gender traits.
Inspiring the Future create an inspiring short campaign Redraw the Balance. They seek to highlight ongoing gender stereotypes by asking kids to draw firefighters, surgeons, fighter pilots. This video illustrates our point because as these occupations were listed, majority of children identified men as holding these roles. Children as early as 5 years of age have already developed gender stereotyped beliefs about what a typical female or male type job should be. These early beliefs can significantly impact a child's self concept and self esteem at a young age.
