The most successful people in life tend to have a strict schedule that they follow. However you don’t have to be successful to have a schedule. A schedule may have everything planned out for the entire day, but making a schedule doesn't mean that it is etched in stone. It is bound to change based on what you have to do. For example, if your teacher assigns you an essay that is due tomorrow, you have to make some changes in your schedule. You can lower the amount of time you spent playing and increase time spent studying. This is the most important thing you should remember while creating a schedule. Nothing is set and things can always change. I personally have a schedule. I can usually follow my schedule because I keep my schedule general. For example, one of my categories is reserved for work. This means that I can do my homework during this time period, work on my project, or anything that isn't playing. Also, I have a time period that’s reserved for playing but if my work isn’t finished, I change that time into a working period. Having a schedule is extremely essential. It prevents procrastination and basically gets your work done. Not only does it to that but it’s also really easy to make. I put this as a part of my curation because a lot of people don’t have schedules and I just want to show how easy and efficient it is to have one. I put a t-shirt in my curation that says always plan ahead. The photo is comical because it says to plan ahead but the text can’t fit the box. So the people creating the shirt weren’t really “planning ahead”.
In high school, many people tend to take to many classes and they end up getting bad grades because the work just overloads them. Eventually, people tend to end the year with bad grades and not take more classes in the future. That’s good (for not taking extra classes in the future), but you have that one year of bad grades that will go onto your transcript. Why don’t you just stop this before it starts? What I am trying to say is don’t take too many honors classes. Know your limits and don’t overload yourself. If you do overload yourself, don’t be afraid to drop to a lower class. It’s better to have an A+ in normal biology then having a B in biology honors. This year, I chose not to take computer science. I heard from my friends that took computer science before and they said it was hard so I decided not to take it in the end. I was happy about this decision because I am taking living environment honors, math honors and science research. I currently have a lot of work to do and I’m glad that I chose not to take computer science. If I did take computer science, I would be pretty overwhelmed and have a lot of work to do. I wouldn’t be able to get early sleep and finish my work. I would be pretty tired. Moreover, I will have more time to study for my other finals and tests because there won’t be a computer science midterm/final for me. This is a part of my curation because many people like my friend Jonathan overloaded his work and he ended up having to drop classes. This isn't necessary just for high school. This is also a lesson in life. What I used for my curation is a quote from Ozzy Osbourne. What he is basically saying is to be careful what you do and don't do things that aren't necessary.
Many people believe that studying the whole day is the way to go. That may be true, but you’ll definitely have a pretty boring life. What my point is, you only have one life, don’t waste it. Go outside and play with your friends, or go on a family trip. No matter what it may be, don’t be secluded. Don’t just sit there and study. Go outside sometimes. You might think that studying is good but it is good to some extent. To much of anything isn’t good for you. So go outside and take in some of the fresh air. Go outside and exercise for a while or just sit there. It’s better than sitting inside all day. However, if you do have a test that you didn’t study for because you were procrastinating (like me) then go study! Sometimes, I just sit on my computer all day and do work and practice problems. Without taking breaks except for eating and bathroom, it gets really tiring. When it’s near the end of the day, I literally feel dead. I have no energy and my eyes hurt from staring at my computer too long. Now, I don’t do it as much as I used to do. I go outside and play tennis with my friends or ride my bike around the block or down the hill. Those days, I have more energy. After sitting at your chair for the whole day, your body isn’t accustomed to getting up and walking around. My article discusses the negatives of staying inside all day and not going outside. One reason taken from my article is that Sunlight actually benefits you. An absence of natural light will throw off your internal rhythms. I chose this for my curation because I commonly do this as well as my friends. Another reason I chose this is because people don’t realize the value of life sometimes, until it’s too late.
Compared to the middle school, the high school has a much bigger variety of clubs. There is almost three times or more clubs. My advice to you is to go to all the clubs that interest you. If you don’t like it, you can always quit and not go. Additionally, if there are two clubs on one day, pick the club you like most and on the next week go to the other club and see which one you would prefer. In high school, sports are much harder to get into because the teams aren’t separated into grade levels. In some cases, sports are separated by skill and others, it’s just one big team. Although you don’t think you will make the team, always try. There are a lot of different clubs. Some clubs that are not in the middle school are the Videogame Club, Model United Nations, Amnesty International, Animal Rights, Woman Warriors, DECA, Model Congress and much more. Some sports that are not in the middle school are Winter Track, Badminton (boys and girls), Bowling, Swimming and Golf. One of the clubs I go to is Model United Nations. This club is an amazing experience that as the name implies, models the United Nations. It is extremely fun and also looks good on your resume if you win an award during the annual HMUNC (Herricks Model United Nations Conventions). This is a part of my curation because clubs add to the overall experience of high school. It makes high school a lot more fun and memorable. The things you do in clubs are things you won't forget.
Battle is one of the best times and things you will do in high school. This is one of the most memorable moments that you will ever have in your life. You can participate in events if you choose, or just be in the crowd and cheer your team on. However you should definitely try to get into an event. You won’t regret it and you will have such a fun time. Additionally, try to do the same events or choose similar events with your friends, that way you and your friends won’t be separated and it would be even more fun. Do not forget to bring water as the room will get hot. The usual events in battle are Trivia (this is separate and does not happen in the gym), Beach Ball Volleyball, Hungry Hippos, Playground Ball, Tic Tac Toe, Balloon Relay, Basketball Relay, 3-Legged Race, Tug of War, Musical Chairs, Hallways and last but not least Dance. In my opinion, Dance, Hallways and Musical Chairs are the best events in Battle. Usually, every grade’s dance is really well organized and practiced and it looks amazing. Every year, people will have different ideas. Musical Chairs is not only one of my favorite events but it’s one of the most competitive ones as well. People are often at the edge of their seat seeing who will win. Finally, we have the hallways. The hallways are the start of battle day and the hallways are all amazing. Freshmen usually don’t have good hallways given that it’s their first year and they aren’t sure what to do. Hallways are completely amazing nonetheless. There is often a huge amount of decorations and you will want to go through all the hallways twice.
There are times when you get a bad grade, or you get into a fight with a friend. You may want to give up for a while and be depressed. But you can always fix this. You can always make up with your friend or just get good grades to balance out the bad. The point is, don’t let only one thing make the rest of your day or life down. In high school, it will be a lot tougher then you think it will. In middle school, you might have slacked off and managed to good without paying attention in class, but in high school it’s definitely harder. Some teachers don’t give review for tests, some give pop quizzes, and there is generally overall, a lot more work to do. When I feel bad because I for example received a bad grade, I usually go to music. Music makes me feel so much better and it brings my spirits up. I have a playlist of my own music that I listen to feel better. Just a side note, music helps (in my case) for me to concentrate and it just makes time seem to go faster as you do your work. This is a part of my curation because I’ve gotten a fair share of bad grades before and I tend to get myself down. However, the right thing to do would be to study (if you get a bad grade) so you won’t get any more bad grades. You also shouldn’t procrastinate (which will be mentioned later). If you get into a fight with a friend, always remember to say sorry (unless you don’t want to be their friends anymore of course) but friends will help you get through high school. The link I put links to song by Imagine Dragons “I’m on top of the world” because this is a good song to get yourself back up. The song lyrics are basically saying that you can do it and you are the best in your world.
Procrastinating in high school is something you definitely don’t want to do. You may have gotten away with it in middle school but in high school, there is a lot more work to do. If you procrastinate, you will have way too much work to do in the end. It is a lot better to do your work earlier or split it out through different days. In my opinion, I prefer splitting up because that gives you more time to do other work. For example, if you have an easy due in a week, you can reserve one day for the introduction, two or three days for the body paragraphs, one day for the conclusion and one day for the bibliography. This means that you will have two or one days to relax (unless you have other work). Therefore, planning out your time is much more easier and efficient. Procrastination happens to everybody. People in general would rather do the things they like first. Until in the future, they come to a point where they realize that you don’t have much of a choice. The article I chose is taken from the Washington Post. It has both why you procrastinate and how to stop. The reason for procrastinating (according to the article), is that your brain prefers to do something fun, under a false belief that you can always do it later. Then however, your panic kicks in as you realize how much time you wasted. Procrastinators often have the false belief of being able to do it later and instead of doing what’s important, they do what’s more fun. I put this in my curation because personally, I was (sometimes still is) a major procrastinator. I would often put the easiest work all the way to the end. Then I would end up with so much work that I wouldn’t be finished until 10 or 11.
