The California Poppy is native to the United States and Mexico. It became the official state flower of California in 1903. They were used by Native Americans medically and the seeds were used in cooking. This flower is perfect for California because it is drought tolerant, self seeding, and easy to cultivate. During the 1890s Sarah Plummer Lemmon wanted it to be the state plant.

The history of Sacramento, California started because of its founder, Samuel Brannan and John Augustus Sutter jr in 1848. The city and the river were both named after Gabriel Moraga. The name Sacramento comes from sacrament meaning " the most sacrament of the body and blood of Christ". The city of Sacramento was founded on February 27, 1850. Yosemite was first established on October 1, 1890. Yosemite is a national park owned by the state of California. Yosemite averages 4 million people visiting its extraordinary park each year. Yosemite habits some of Califorina's biggest mountains including the Sierra Nevada. About 10 million years ago the Sierra Nevada was formed and created river beds, streams, and canyons. Yosemite's valley is home to 160 rare plants in the park, meadows, and animals. Yosemites beauty draws attention to many tourist every year. This is a portrait of João Rodrigues Cabrilho. He was one of the first Europeans to discover and explore the coast of California. He reached San Diego Bay in September. He was the first European to set foot in California. while exploring California he unfortunately passed away on January 1543. This is an advertisement for sailing to California for the Gold Rush using the Clipper ship. The Gold Rush started when James Wilson Marshall discovered gold in a sawmill in 1848. Word got out about the gold and many people traveled from the rest of the United States. Half of them came from overseas and the other half used the California Trail and the Gila River. The Gold Rush promoted businesses including Levi Strauss who invented Levi jeans made from denim. Eventually the gold got harder to find so families were forced to go back home. This ended the Gold Rush in 1855.
