Dana Greene is a student at Michigan state university who was trying to get his masters in public health. He had heard that there had been multiple acts of racism at his school. In a response to these acts he launched a peaceful protest. This protest consisted of him kneeling for 24 hours. He started at seven in the morning and ended the same time tomorrow. 2. Greene relates to Kill a Mocking Bird by his peaceful protest. Atticus and Dana Greene relate because of what they do to support the black community. Atticus supports the black community by being Tom Robinson's lawyer. While Dana knelt for 24 hours and made his silent voice heard. Both of these people protested racism by there actions and not words.
Dana Greene Jr. took a knee for 24 hours on Monday, Sept. 25. "Greene said he hopes his demonstration opened peoples eyes to issue facing the black student population"(Dana Greene September 25). Dana Greene was a student at Michigan state university. There had been a lot of racist things going on campus. In a response to that he took it into his own hands knowing theres nothing the principal of the school can't do much. To do that he knelt for 24 hours in protest to all of the racist acts happening. "I think there are probably some people who thought what I did was a divise. I think hope is a better word"(Dana Greene September 27). In this quote Dana says how people will probably think that what he did was to outrage the people being racist. But really he is launching a peaceful protest that he says is hope that the racism stops. 2. “I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a speck o’trouble outa him. Not a speck”(lee 195). Tom Robinson's boss is showing courage here because he stands up and defends a black man in front of friends and family around the town, when he didn't need to say anything. Dana and Tom's boss a similar just cause of there courage. Dana didn't need to kneel but he did anyway. His boss didn't need to speak out in the crowd but chose to. Both of these acts took a lot of courage but sadly only one really affected anyone or anything. Tom's boss speaking out at the case did nothing really since Tom still went to jail. Dana on the other hand got national attention and got people talking about the problems of racism.
"We don’t need to depend on our celebrities and athletes to do it. We can do it ourselves"(Dana Greene September 25). Dana Greene Jr a student at Michigan state was witnessing racism. In response to this he launched a successful peaceful protest that brought him national attention. At seven in the morning he took a knee at the courtyard. He stayed there kneeling for twenty four straight hours switching his knees every 15 minutes. He also said "As long as we rise up as people like we've been doing and continue to do, we can really make a positive change in this country regardless of who holds the highest office in the land. Or any office honestly"(Dana Greene September 25 2018). 2 These two quotes connect to the book To Kill a Mockingbird because of when Atticus accepts the trial of defending Tom Robinson. Atticus knew that he was going to lose but he still went out there and tried his hardest to make a difference. "Do you defend N**gers Atticus... of course I do"(lee 99). Dana Greene and Atticus are similar because they are both trying to make a difference. The difference between what they are doing though is that what Atticus is doing won't change much but Dana could change a lot.
