The Civil War was fought between the United States and the Confederate States. The Confedearate Staes were eleven states that left the Union to protect the institution of slavery. The war began because the U.S believed it was not right for them to leave and in 1865, The United States took the victory.
The border States were the slave states. Arkansas, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennesse are just a few of the border states. During the war, every slave state, except South Carolina, contributed men to the Union and Confederate armies. There were even times where men from the same family fought of different sides
When Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1862, he passed a law that said all states that were still rebelling a hundred days after September 22nd, would be free forever.
In June 1862, Congress started to free slaves and by September 1863, slaves were freed in the rebelling states, but not the Union states. In December 1865, Congress passed the 13th Amendment,which let all slaves be freed in the United States
On June 2 1865, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, signed the surrender terms and brings the bloodiest four years of war to an end.
