This video is about Ethiopia's relations with Eritrea. The video describes their history of fighting including the wars with Italy and the Ethiopian Civil War and how Eritrea was affected in each of those periods. In my book, the events of the Ethiopian Civil War (1974-1991) are shown and the effects of the war on a family is the main plot line of the novel. This war happened after the War with Italy (involving Eritrea) and during this civil war, some conflicts with Italy and Eritrea were still occurring. There are consistent political conflicts throughout multiple nations in Africa that have evolved but continued over time. This video explains one of those conflicts as an example of constant struggle. This video discusses Africa's political lens through its conflicts within its borders. These conflicts have added to civil wars, political unrest, and poverty and they have been a continuous part of the nations' history. Wars between countries in Africa have been straining and long lasting. After constant conflict between these nations for a long period of time the nations were left with high numbers of displaced people, high tensions, and many problems to fix. This has led to a consistent state of unrest and has prohibited healing and solutions in the country. This video was the best to choose because it contributes to my explanation of Africa and how bad the problems are. There are certainly many parts of Africa that are well off and do not have as many conflicts. But the parts of Africa that do have conflicts are the parts that we focus on because they are the ones that need help. It is just assumed that Africa as a whole has many problems which is not true, but it is in fact the scope and consistency of certain problems in some countries that make people talk about the whole country and generalize the problem. This video has helped to focus that problem on one area in order to hopefully realize that in order to fix a widespread problem, you have to start somewhere.
Ethiopia has had many struggles since it became a nation. This video describes the political issues that stem from the corruption and constant problems this country has faced. Ethiopia has good resources and agricultural land, but corruption (bribery, lack of discipline, and institutions that do not respond to citizens' needs) has lead to a huge difference in the wealthy and the poor population which has thrown the country into conflict after conflict. Major causes of national poverty and inequality has been consistent bribery of government officials to evade paying taxes and poor land allocation and regulation. There has been a single party controlling the government of Ethiopia and many claim this is a corrupt party that ignores problems and dissent in order to stay in power. In this country there are many civil rights issues, corrupt government officials, and ignored people living in poverty. This video shows how Africa has evolved over time through a political lens because it shows that from the beginning of its history to the time of the Italian Wars and the Ethiopian Civil wars (as described in my book) to now, there have been constant struggles of corruption in government. Attempts to revolt or fix government have led to wars and death for many innocent people in the country. This video talks about current statistics of poverty and corruption which have gotten worse over time. This video was one of the best three to choose for this assignment because it most accurately depicts the true struggles of Africa and places these struggles into view of the audience. It allows me to explain what Africa's problems have amounted to at this point to allow me to explain how this issue should be fixed. We can see that conflict has not fixed any problems in Africa and many solutions have tried and failed, which makes Africa a hard and unique country to deal with politically. The big problem, as explained in my book as well as the video, is corruption. The only way to fix corruption is to completely cut off its sources. This would be hard and take a long time to do, but if each issue is tackled separately then a solution may be offered.
This video talks about the strained political relationships among Ethiopia and the rest of the world, specifically the United States. It elaborates on the history of our relationship, its struggles, as well as the necessity of keeping it alive. Ties between the two countries started in 1903 economically partially because the United States did not have an interest in seizing African land, which the country very much appreciated. They are now bound by common interests such as anti-terrorism. The united states trades with Ethiopia and supports them with about $500 million dollars for developmental and humanitarian aid. The bilateral relationship between our nations has been criticized due to the state of human rights issues with politicians known to be harsh towards opposition. Many people think that the Unites States is turning a blind eye to the mistreatment of Ethiopia's citizens in order to keep their agreements standing. There was recently a travel warning issued for Ethiopia due to its state of "ongoing unrest" and the United States has recently formally visited the country with which it has bilateral political relations in order to check on the relationship. This video relates Africa's political struggles through a global lens. It shows how relations have evolved over time and how outside countries have influenced Africa and tried to improve its state. Efforts have not gone unnoticed, but the problem is also far too big and includes too many different problems to be solved anytime soon. My book focuses on Ethiopia and not the entirety of Africa but many of the problems in Ethiopia are reflected throughout the Continent. The outside countries trying to help the struggles throughout Africa are instrumental in finding solutions to the problems that have been tormenting parts of the continent for ages. This video was the best to choose because by using our country as an example of outside help offered to the country, we can get a scope of what we are doing to help, what we should be doing to help, and whether or not our help will change things. Because America holds the global standing it does, it is important to consider it in global issues and their potential solutions.
