To go in depth on the topic of how reading increases human emotions such as empathy or being able to see situations from multiple perspectives I studied the book “Fahrenheit 451” and read the article “How Reading Makes Us More Human”. When people read it brings them to be selfless, part from our world and become more thoughtful. Just as said in my selected article “deep reading -- slow, immersive, rich in sensory detail and emotional and moral complexity -- is a distinctive experience.” There is no other experience like reading it’s not something you see, hear, feel, or touch it’s all mental. Everything that you read is played out in your head and how you see it. “Paul examines the connection of great literature not to our moral selves, but to our spiritual selves.” This quote shows that reading helps us have an even a deeper connection with ourselves not just the people around us. I also found some evidence in “Fahrenheit 451” when Montag read books and even in a moment of distress thinks that “The circus must go on, even with the war beginning within the hour... He watched the scene fascinated, not wanting to move.”(127) Him not wanting to move shows his insightfulness and thoughtfulness on the matter because he doesn’t run and try to survive he stands there and thinks with the risk of death. Another quote I found was “Montag’s face was entirely numb and featureless; he felt his head turn like a stone craving to the dark place next door, set in its bright border of flowers.”(107) This quote shows his thoughtfulness and his vocabulary increased with the use of books and he was more insightful. He is also craving to read craving to be whole and connect with himself when he describes his “dark place”. When it comes to reading we all have a “dark place” or thoughtful side. So Overall, reading helps enhance our mental train of thought, vocabulary and so much more. Most importantly it helps us connect with ourselves in a way that’s not possible in any other way.
