Research has shown that when people look at these kind of attractive images, they tend to compare them with their appearance and more often than not, think that their appearance is inferior to what they have seen. Such comparisons make most women miserable with their appearance and often puts them in a negative mood. The comparisons made by women against other women in terms of appearance are different. The comparisons made are those done in person, of images on television, billboards and magazines. Most women were found to have a sense of inferiority when they compared their appearance with those of images on social media. The highest probable cause of this was due to the fact that images posted on social media are selected after a number of shots and the perfect image is then selected after being edited and improved. Women are reportedly in their worst sullen state of mind after social media comparisons than any other comparison.Women who made social media comparisons were reportedly dissatisfied with their looks and eager to start unhealthy weight loss activities such as dieting.Such findings correlate with other findings which show that social media comparisons or jealousy with depression and self dissatisfaction on body appearance. Women who make more appearance comparisons are generally prone to be dissatisfied with their body image than others. The research also suggests that a similar trend can be obtained for men and people of varying ages. The effects of social media on body image varies. Social media which are more pic-oriented such as Snapchat and Instagram provide a platform for people to make more appearance comparisons hence have more effect than other social media in terms of body image and state of mind. To reduce such effects of social media on body image, people could restrain themselves from such social media platforms that may encourage or lead them to make appearance comparisons. People should also refrain form following celebs who they think would initiate comparisons between them in terms of appearance.Social media literacy is also an important lesson that one has to take with him or her when using social media. Thinking about the reality and motives of the photo or picture would surely reduce the comparisons made on social media. People would be content with their appearance.
