According to Gerry Gabinet, director of Economic Development and Tourism with the county, Sherwood Park was “on the shortlist” for the outlet centre he referred to as a “destination mall.” “We were in the running, and then when they took a look at the entire traffic count, they felt (the airport location) had the best traffic count and accessibility in the region,” he explained. However, Gabinet said it was never a project the county was pursuing more “in the background” than anything. “A lot of our work goes on going behind the scenes, where we approach the various companies, give them supporting material, give them the data so they can make their decisions,” he said. “They were looking at stuff around Highway 16, along Highway 2 as kind of the real key routes that stuff happens in, in our community.”
Tony Balakas of Sweet Tree Cannabis Co., said they weren’t taking any chances — applying online and lining up at City Hall on the day the city started accepting applications.
