In the review done by Christian Donlan for Eurogamer.net, He comments on the way the player and game interact. How the world is wide open for you to explore as much or as little as you desire, and how the game teaches you, not taking your hand and guiding you, but more in a sink or swim kind of way. One of Christians main focus points is how the game transitions from intense action to quiet moments of recovery, " In fact, it is a relentless battle, grinding and exacting. It is a game about fighting, and an adventure that does not trade in joy so much as relief."
"My favorite thing about Hyper Light Drifter is all the new swear words I invented while playing it." That's how this review, by Riley MacLeod for Kotaku, opens. He delves more into the difficulty of the game and how despite him generally disliking the games that make you replay a level over and over " until you somehow, against all odds, achieve a brief moment of perfection.", that he did in fact like Hyper Light Drifter. He comments that the game although challenging is carefully balanced to give you a feeling of satisfactory accomplishment.
In this review, Griffin McElroy of Polygon talks about the abstract and interpretive nature of the game, saying, "I'm hesitant to break down the backdrop of Hyper Light Drifter, because its plot, settings, characters, history and world building are so ethereal." He talks about the difficulty of the gameplay such as the bosses or map, and also the great atmosphere the game creates.
IGN's Brandin Tyrrel, reviews the Hyper Light Drifter, talking about its call back to old-school action style games and also how it handles some more mature themes. Ultimately, however, he states that the interpretive, dreamlike story detracted from his enjoyment of the game, saying, " It takes a commendable risk with its bold storytelling that intrigues, but doesn’t fully pay off in the end."
"Try, try, and try again." In this review Andy Kelly, really delves into the story and aesthetics of Hyper Light Drifter. Opening with an in-depth description of the game, and setting it drops you into. Later it speaks about the unwavering difficulty of the game and the rewarding feelings of overcoming it.
