This article is a description of if you cheat on someone, that means you truly don't love them. Cheating is the antithesis of honesty, loyalty, respect, and faithfulness. In the Great Gatsby, Tom says that he loves Daisy when right after the wedding he cheated on her. When he tells her examples of ways that he showed he loved her, that all doesn't seem to matter when he just throws it all away. There is nothing about their love that is true. Their love is broken. Because of Tom's actions, Daisy has spent more time around Gatsby and when Tom finds out he is mad. This is a consequence for Tom and it is seeming to backfire on himself. Not only does the cheating affect Tom, but it also affects Daisy. When Tom finds out about the affair, Daisy seems scared and never actually has her chance with Gatsby, who she seems to love.
In this article, author M. Rosie Shrout talks about how "Individuals who have been cheated on experience strong emotional and psychological distress following infidelity." With this being said, it is seen that Daisy does feel some low self-esteem when she knows Tom is cheating with another woman. We know this because when Tom gets the phone call from his mistress Daisy gets up acting all weird and feeling like she needs to know that things are okay with them. "It couldn't be helped" cried Daisy with tense gayety. (15). Daisy doesn't realize how sad she really is until she starts hanging out with Gatsby. The only time Daisy seemed really happy was when "I knew that except for the half-hour she'd been alone with Gatsby she wasn't having a good time." (106). Because Tom is cheating on Daisy she then starts to realize what makes her happy so she has an affair with Gatsby, because of all the pain she has gone through with Tom. Self-esteem and confidence in herself seem to be a problem because of the ways that Tom is treating Daisy.
I chose this image because it represents a good symbol of the book. This reminds me of the eyes talked about in the book and how they could see everything that occurred. In this picture the person in the eye is representing all the things that the "Eye" could see. That being the bad things that Tom has done with Myrtle, like having an affair when he is married. Not only that but the fact that Gatsby and Daisy killed Myrtle right in front of the eye. The persons hands in this image look like they are waving for help. For this overall theme, because of the bad things Tom has done, Myrtle being dead is a consequence for him, and he is drowning in his own mistakes as now his own wife is leaning toward Gatsby and not Tom.
I chose this article because it goes along well with the reason why Daisy decides to stay with Tom. This article gives specific reasons why women stay with cheating men. One that stuck out to me is "Societal perception and status". This specific part talks about how men with money don't have to worry about their wife or significant other going astray because he knows he can bribe her with things, money, and wealth. That is exactly how Tom treats Daisy. Gatsby explains, "Her voice is full of money" (120). Because of this money leash, Daisy is torturing herself with someone who doesn't actually love her. A hidden consequence that she doesn't realize. The theme states that there can be hidden consequences and by marrying a rich man just for the money and not for the person they are is her consequence.
Because Gatsby obsessed over Daisy for 5 years, his past ends up coming back to haunt him. When Tom finds out about the affair between Gatsby and Daisy he gets mad at Gatsby and saying things to Daisy about how much he loves her. Tom says things such as, "Not that day I carried you down from the Punch Bowl to keep your shoes dry?" (132). This quote explains the feelings that Tom felt toward Daisy. Gatsby took things way too far and by having an affair with her, the accident ended up coming back to hurt him, like his past did.
This song is about a "good girl" who is in love with a guy who doesn't treat her right, just like Daisy is with Tom. The song explains how the girl is blindsided by all that the boy is doing. In the Great Gatsby, Daisy knows that Tom is having an affair with another woman. It seems as if Daisy doesn't want to do anything about it. She is blindsided by all his money and glory that she can't see that Gatsby is treating her like a queen and she doesn't even seem to notice Tom is not the right one to be with. This song relates back to the theme statement because Daisy is the individual that is having consequences come back to her. She is being used and cheated on when she has so much potential to be with someone who actually cares and she wouldn't be crushed.
