John Lott is being interviewed, he is the author “More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws”. In the interview John shared his views on gun control, he said that states that have had an increase in guns have also had a decrease in violent crimes. This increase in guns has come with a set of laws which are called the “shall-issue” laws, they state that in order to own a gun you must have a clean criminal record and be checked for mental illness. John made a good point in his argument which was that states with an increase in crimes have had a decrease in crimes because most people will less likely attack someone who they know is armed. In my opinion the interview is a great way to reveal the point of view one has on gun control. John Lott is an author and wrote a book about gun control in different states. John’s findings help influence how people think about gun control and it is also very informative for many who were aware of the crime rates in other states. “Interview with John Lott, Author of More Guns, Less Crime.” University of Chicago Press.
Emma Gonzalez shares a speech after the Florida shooting in Stoneman Douglas High School. She calls out President trump, the NRA, and the people who support them, saying that it seems that they care more about keeping their guns safe than their children. She wants the government and our president to do more than just send their thoughts and prayers. Children are becoming afraid of school because of all this violence occuring. She states that our president got Thirty million dollars from the NRA, and asks if that's how much theses students are worth to them. This speech is a great way to expose the reality of gun control because it is a very powerful and inspiring speech. One can really see the emotion of hurt and anger in Emma’s face as she explains how this shooting would have never happened if the government did something about the gun violence we keep seeing. Listening to this High School student talk about a shooting that killed 17 students at her school shows the audience how big and serious this issue is and it encourages people to speak up for what they believe in. The song “This is America” by Childish Gambino showcases the serious issue that is gun control, as well as exposing how bad or society is now and days and that we need to change. The music video for this song is a good one and does well explaining the lyrics to the song. The main idea is that Childish Gambino is joined with a group of teens, and they are just dancing and having a good time. Meanwhile in the background their are all theses bad events. This shows that our society today is avoiding real problems that are going on by being on our electronics and posting on social media. There are parts in the video that Gambino shooting people and everytime he shoots them the gun is taken away with care and protection but the bodies are just dragged away. This portrays that the government seems to care more about our guns than our lives. In my opinion the song is a awesome way to portray the serious issue that is gun control. This song impacts the audience by showing how we need to do better as a society and not push problems aside but face them. The graphic scenes in the music video show the audience the reality of our society and how we need to change. “Childish Gambino – This Is America.” Genius, 6 May 2018.
Zed Nelson is a famous photographer, his photos were used in a TIME magazine. Zed’s photographs are of families showing off their guns. These families are just a married couple or parents with their children. Zed started capturing theses photos when his friend was shot in front of him and he was also shot at but the gunman missed. From that traumatic day forward he wanted to capture the obsession Americans have on guns. He states that it he is disturbed that for the past 13 years that he started capturing American gun culture, nothing has changed. In my opinion the photos taken by Zed Nelson are an interesting way to show how gun control affects America. The photos clearly portray how parents want guns to protect themselves and their families. They also show them teaching their kids to use guns for protection. One can see in these photograph the determination and drive in these peoples faces as all they want to do is keep their families safe. “Gun Nation Revisited, Photographs of America by Zed Nelson.” 17 Aug. 2012.
David Brooks is the author of this article he is sharing his opinion on gun control. He states that we are not going to solve any gun control problems if we all we do is vent. People who are opposed of guns can’t just protest, vent and disrespect the people who are supporting guns. He says if they want something to change they need to show them respect and they need to try and understand their points of view and once you do that the gun supporters will do the same to you. This will end up being an issue both opposed and supporters can solve together. This article is a great way to show the issue of gun control. We get to see the mindset of a person and how they think we should solve this big controversial issue. David shared about what the gun opposers can do to better the situation but not as much advise for the gun supporters, this can mean that he is a bit bias. Brooks, David. “Respect First, Then Gun Control.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 20 Feb. 2018.
The article shows examples of photo covers in news papers that inform the public of the gun violence in the world right now. One cover photo was a gun with blood on the floor with a headline said “"Since Newtown, 84,523 people have been killed by guns in the U.S, We cry. We get angry. We demand action. Then we forget...until the next time”. Another cover shown is 20 children who were victims of a school shooting in Connecticut, with the headline that read “Shame on U.S.”. In another cover there is a AR-15 and big lettering that read “"Same gun, different slay”. This source is an eye catching way to portray gun control. Theses businesses are trying to catch the audience's attention by making them emotional and making there headlines big. The cover that had the children on it is a great example of impacting the audience in an emotional way. It shows that America should be ashamed of not addressing the gun violence issues before things came to 20 elementary students dying in a school shooting.
