The theme of this article, Teen Cell Phone Addiction, relates to Brave New World and the dystopian element of the citizens living in a dehumanized state. In Brave New World, all the citizens take soma to "Take a holiday from reality whenever you like, and come back without so much as a headache..."(54). Soma is a way out of feeling pain in Brave New World, and is something the citizens of the dystopian London take to relieve any stress they may be having. In today's world, our phones are similar to Soma. The article states that, "teens use technology and the internet to avoid dealing with life’s problems." People use their phones for everything these days, but a ton of people use their phones to calm down, to "take a vacation" through various apps and distract themselves from their pain and problems. In both the book and today's society, citizens live in a dehumanized state by not confronting their problems and pain but getting a short-term way out of it. Humans must feel pain and go through hard times in order to learn and grow. But, without going through rough patches in life, a human cannot grow, and will remain the same ignorant person they are. Distracting oneself and leaving every difficult situation will never allow a person to mature in life.
