In this article, they not only talk about how materialistic couple are less likely to be happy in there marriage but how Materialism can make relationship as well as destroy them. Paget makes the argues that we use materialism to build the foundation of love. We buy jewelry, rose, and other materialism to support our relationships. She expands on how she thinks that we now love in order to give and receive gifts. In the article she also talk about a man named Jeff that was married for 15 years and he has agreed that materialism did play a part in his marriage. He even talks about how he purchase a house in which he was comfortable with but because his wife wanted more. He work so hard and so in a few years he got a bigger house with a larger mortgage. The financial burden of this new house added tension to their marriage. They got a divorce. If one person in the relationship is materialistic than the other person who is not has to work hard to meet the need of that person. This will grow bitterness and resentment in that person. Just like in the Great Gatsby, Gatsby didn’t really care about the house and all that he had but because daisy was all about material things he work so hard so that he could meet her need. And because he was rejected by her we saw that he was actually full of anger and bitterness.
This is a movie about a girl that grew up poor and she heads to the city. When she gets to city she starts to look for a husband but her only expectation is that he be rich. Gatsby talks about how he thought that Daisy only accepted him because he was in uniform like every other guy she didn’t know that he wasn’t rich. “He was at present a penniless young man without a past, and at any moment the invisible cloak of his uniform might slip through his shoulders.” (149) in the movie any man that approaches her that is poor gets rejected. She not only puts them down but embarrassed them in front of everyone. She finally gets a person that has money but their only one problem he has a village accent. Well in the movie it so happens that her husband is from a village where there many rules. One of them was, if a married women sleep with another man that is not her husband she will becomes mad right away. There was no way she could get out of her marriage. She spent her husband money without saving and they loses all their money. She tries to find ways to survive but she finds none because she can’t even sell her body. Although this movie has a twist at the end we still see how people based who they should be with based on material things. And that what Daisy did she wanted the man with more money and better status. Although she was in love with Gatsby she was sure that Tom had more money and was well known.
Yemi Alade is a young African women. The song I picked is Ferrari and I picked it because she is just like Daisy. She wants the house, the jewelry and the fame. In Nick’s and Tom last encounter in the book Nicks says "Then he went into the jewelry store to buy a pearl necklace.” (179) We are assuming that its for Daisy because she loves things such has necklaces. In this song she is basically saying that she will not go out with a guy that is not able to buy her a big house, or a ferrari because love is not just by the word we speak but material things. Same thing with Daisy Gatsby said “In the song she talks not only about buying her any type of shoes or clothes but Gucci which is very expensive and big brand. In the song she also says that he must open a supermarket for her. Which is not necessary a big thing in American but in African how you know a women who has a rich husband. They usually have a big shop, supermarket, or businesses.
In this article, Reuters Staff highlights that materialistic couples don’t make a perfect match. Meaning if two people only care about material things they will only end up separated or getting a divorced. Talks about a study that show that married couples that place high value on owning more possession are more likely to experience financial problem. Although, Daisy and Tom didn’t have financial problems because they had old money. We still see how they are not a perfect match for each other. At the end of the book, Nick says “Tom and Daisy they smashed up thing and creatures and than retreat back to their money or their vast carelessness whatever it is that kept them together.”(179) In other articles I mention what a marriage looks like when one person only cares about naturalistic but we have to understand that in the Great Gatsby both Tom and Daisy were only with each other because of material things. Daisy wasn’t poor either she too had old money. So Tom also benefited from having her as a wife. Just like this article many argue that materialism is not a good match for marriage. I think that Nick would of disagreed because Daisy and Tom only care about the materialistic things. They according to him made the perfect match. In the book Fitzgerald doesn’t say directly why Daisy left Gatsby but he shows us that Daisy stays in her marriage because Tom has more to offer her as far as materialistic.
In this blog by the Home of Economist. They talk about how we have focused more about having the jewelry or gift during a holiday that we forget that it’s about spending time with the person. They also argue that materialism does not benefits long term relationship. They advice that we focus more on building the relationship with the person than focusing on the material things. This kills the idea that the more similar two people are the better match they are for each other. Although this might be right we know that how we feel about money affects our marriage. Especially, if one focuses more on material things. Someone might be reading the Great Gatsby might tell themself well they had a like of things in common. Both Daisy and Tom came from rich families and it seems like they share same interest when they started dating. This explains why although they have so much things in common because Daisy values material things she is not happy in their marriage.
In this painting there’s people that are dress nice and we see that the whole culture is based on materialistic things. There is a women who is holding a child and yet she has all these jewels on. We also see these skinny girl that have all these clothes on. In the picture leads bad to the man in the back . The reason I chose this is because it reminds me of Tom and Daisy and how Daisy had a child and Tom had his mistresses that only loved him for his money. Even his wife only was with him because of his money
