Geography is an important topic when talking about a group of people, because it can affect people's daily lives. Navajo Nation is located in the desert area of the United States, while the Navajo Nation people live on the desert plateau. The average amount of rain on the Navajo Nation reservation is between five inches in the lower elevation areas and 25 inches in the higher elevation locations. Sometimes it also comes as snow. Their reservation is prone to snow and temperatures below freezing in the winter, while in the summer temperatures can reach above 100 degrees. With rain in the late summer can cause the unpaved roads to be unsafe, as well as the common flash floods can hinder some tasks. The Navajo Nation territory extends into the states Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, spanning over 27,000 square miles. This land is larger than that of ten of the states! Within this land live over 250,000 Navajo people, and some of these people are in the nation's tribal government.
The evilution of shoes is drastic and this is how it started for the Navajo Nation. The early people of the tribe created the moccasins so they wouldn't have blisters on their feet and to keep their feet warm. Moccasins are made out of deer skin and have raw hide soles.
Food is a very important part to a culture, as well as what they use to make it. The clay oven is something the Navajo use to cook stuff and bake stuff. Its made of clay and a woven pad and they put in a couple of sticks and then meat is put in the fire and is cooked it's very reliable in being able to cook stuff easily.
There a lots of ceremonies in the Navajo Nation, but one major ceremony is the puberty ceremony. This ceremony lasts for 4 days and has a few things that happen. The girl participating in the ceremony first runs a quarter of a mile to greet the sun before it rises. Then the girl on the last day runs with children behind her to represent that she will be a good mother who her children will follow. The girl then meets with a medicine man to figure out her life plans. There are 6 main parts of her plan: 1) ask for it; 2) draw it; 3) write it; 4) ask for it; 5) pray for it; 6) receive it.
This item is something used for door mats but to the Navajo Nation this is a whole different story. Since 1941 the modern day Navajo people make rugs to honor them like their ancestors. These rugs are made out of wool or yarn, and they are used for decoration, and moccasins and shoes.
This Weather Report was in the Navajo Language and was given by Paul Jones. It was aired throughout the day on KTNN AM 660. This report was given on February 17, 2009 at 7:30 AM. This shows that the Navajo Tribe still use and honor their native language and what the people that know only their language be able to understand the weather report.
The Navajo Disease Theory is a very popular disease theory and states that a sickness that can be caused by intrusive objects, loss or possession of the soul or violations of taboo. They don't believe that individuals get sick for genetic reasons but for reasons that are in your soul. To cure these diseases ceremonies are taken place. In these ceremonies there are different actions such as back biting. The back biting is when the medicine man will bite someones back and then the person feels better. Hand shaking or trembling was also considered a gift, because they think a god is giving you luck.
Some people from the Navajo Tribe were in listed in the military during WWII, as they became know as the Navajo Nation Code-talkers and their code was never cracked by the Axis. Though to accomplish this feat they took young men away from their homes to unknown locations away from friends and family.
