I read this book for the first time in fourth grade and I've read it probably 12 times since. A terrible family accident kills Aubrey's father and sister and leaves her mother deeply depressed. One day she wakes up, and her mother is gone. The character development is so strong and moving, showing an 11-year-old girl go from having nothing, to ultimately, being happy again.

This woman and her twin survived after being tortured in the Holocaust, and then she went on to forgive a man who was responsible for what happened to them. She took him back to a concentration camp and they signed documents in proof of the horrific incidents.
