Hi Students/Friends!
Welcome to my study guide on political economy! Many of you may see political economy like the little cartoon above and are wondering where the two roads intersect. My goal is to allow you to figure out where the cross roads is and what exactly political economy means. I hope that this page allows you to learn more about the topic in a fun, interactive, yet educational manner. Each of these sources was handpicked for you in order to explain the topic and give a deeper dive on certain areas.
This source gives a very short article on what political economy is providing a very brief overview of the topic. This is very important because it allows a student to dip their toes in the water prior to throwing a lot of information at them. The source is also giving a very simplistic way of seeing political economy which makes it very understandable. It is essential to have as it incorporates an easy way to learn about the general idea of the topic before going into all of the specifics that make up political economy. The short one minute video is also super helpful and quick way of understanding the meaning of political economy.
This is the next thing that you should watch while studying for a political economy test. It is a lecture done by Dr. Alexander from Wheaton College. She presents all of the ideas that you will need in a very understandable manner. This is an amazing resource to follow with as it allows you to see an overview of the entire topic. Within the lecture, every area is touched upon and will be a good way for the student to get notes. It also shows definitions for key terms and different sides of some arguments that occur within political economics. Although, as it covers a large amount of information, it is a bit longer and not as in depth on every topic.
This is a quiz that I developed in order to test your understanding of some of the basic terms that are associated with political economy. After watching the lecture, you should be aware of these definitions and able to do well on the quiz. It can also be used as a benchmark to ensure that you were truly paying attention during the lecture and processing the information being presented. This is beneficial for learning about the topic because it will allow a student to come to mastery on the terms in a more interactive manner. After taking the quiz, it will be evident which areas, if any, the student needs to go back to in the lecture before continuing on to learning about more aspects of political economics. Although it does not include all of the terms, it ensures that there is a good foundation on the topic especially for the economic terms.
This video is an introduction to the differences between a command (state led) economy and a market economy. It gives a general outline of what the different economies look like along with giving the pros and cons of each. The video provides a deeper dive on the arguments and differences presented in the lecture by Dr. Alexander. This is beneficial because it allows the student to hear the lesson and see visuals that can act as symbols to help them remember the lesson. Khan academy is a very popular and free website that allows students to learn about topics -that may be complex- in a simplistic manner. The video makes it very easy to understand what both economies look like and where a majority of society is leaning towards today.
This is short essay regarding the measurements of economic growth. It allows a deeper dive on the topic of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The article displays the key differences between that and the Gross National Product (GNP). This is beneficial for students studying the subject because it really breaks down and gives a further explanation on some key things that were discussed in the lecture. Another perk is there is a very short video that will allow the students to not simply read in order to understand. For some students, economics is not something they have studied, so it is very important to provide them with this article to give them a quick overview of the relevant terms.
