Over 600,000 mens died during the war and and estimate more than that. After this war, the country government change to favoring the people. The government during the civil war has strong alliance business groups such as railroad. White people, used to years of wartime sacrifice, channeled their efforts into the new economy. There is also a lot of political in the Civil war, the congress supported homestead, and President pass the Homestead Act, an act that made public lands in the West available to settlers without payment. Also, a huge wave of immigrants came in from Europe because of the government corruption there. The Civil War shifted political power from the various states to Washington, DC
After the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the south. But they face a problem, that of a free people surrounded by many hostile whites. After the Emancipation Proclamation, things were still hard, they have to deal with granting full citizenship for freed slaves. The reconstruction was put in effect between 1866 and 1877, which is to reorganizing the South, readmitting them to the Union, and make black and white could live together. But the South did not like it. After they're being freed, they had an opportunity to learn and literate. This change America by a cost of a war, the first president to get assassinated, additional amendments and the blacks are finally freed.
Before the war started, the south and north has two different economies. The south relied on farms, and the north has a diversity of industry, finance, and commerce resting on the free labor of wage earners and small proprietors. Because of this, the South relied on slaves to help them. But the Civil War interrupted the growth of the south by destroying properties, blocking the trades with Europe, because of this the south is short in supplies, food and weapons. The south has to print out a lot of paper money, and this leads to huge inflation. The inflation then spreads out to the North, but the north supplied the army enough that the north economy doesn't plummeted. The aftermath of this war left the south with no money left to build, white planters lost most of their wealth because of the freed slaves and change how cottons was grown and sold. During reconstruction, the south tried to transform the region into a free-labor economy like the North, but the transition was never so clear. Because into the 20th century, white still uses African American labor. Also, after the war, they tried to sharecropping but it lead to cycles of debt that kept families bound to the land. The war and reconstruction led to south in a period of poverty. In the north, there was the increased presence of the federal government in the economy. They created more colleges, replace state banks with national banks that helps increase trades between regions. The war also grow the relationship between the government and the business elite. This new relationship created a political backlash, especially in the West and South against Washington’s perceived eastern and industrial bias. The end of slavery also create political conflict over U.S economy.
The most difficult thing for the southerners is that they have to find a new way to plan a system of labor, since the slave is freed. Before the war, they have to work for the landowners, after the war a lot of former slaves still work for them but they have freedom. Many African American women withdraw from the labor and devote more time with families. Children now go to school. As a result, landowner is short in workers. Urban also grow during reconstructions, creating more diverse jobs and work. Cotton, sharecropping, farms is still the south economy. During reconstruction, many white is accepted into factories and blacks are being excluded. Politics also change a lot during the era, there is a lot of controversies like. On what terms should the defeated Confederacy be reunited with the Union? Who should establish these terms, Congress or the President? What should be the place of the former slaves in the political life of the South? After Lincoln's death, Andrew Johnson, in 1865 put into effect his own Reconstruction plan, which gave the white South a free hand in establishing new governments, this lead the north to think the President favored the white. But Congress overturned him and establish Amendment 14 and 15.
