Message from Relief Society President Buffy Bentley

Sisters,

I am so excited to serve with you and to serve you! As I am new to many of you, I’d like to briefly introduce myself. I grew up in Orem, Utah as number 6 in a family of 8 kids. I love to sing and have been singing all my life. During my junior year of high school I went on a choir tour to Washington D.C. I loved it instantly and knew I was going to live on the east coast. After I graduated high school, I left home to work for a family in Portsmouth, VA as a live-in nanny. Knowing there would be “slim-pickins” by way of worthy men, I just knew I would not meet anyone I would want to date! My plan was to work and play as much as I wanted for as long as I wanted. God had a different plan. I met Sam, a freshly returned missionary, at the New Year’s YSA dance and in August of that year we were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. We lived in North Carolina for the first 15 years of our marriage, moving several times within the state, until summer of 2016 when Heavenly Father called us here. I am so thankful for the promptings of the Holy Ghost and especially thankful when I listen and follow that direction.

As I begin this new season of service in my life, I want to testify that I know that our Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ know each of us. There have been so many times in my life when I have felt their love and direction. I know that each of us is here in this ward for a reason. I know that as I have asked I have been given answers, some of which were hard, but all have made me better, happier, and more able to serve those around me. I know we have a prophet today who leads us and loves us. In President Nelson’s talk this past conference he spoke of The Book of Mormon and testified of its truthfulness. As I read the Book of Mormon I know of its truthfulness. I am thankful for prophets in the past who have acted on promptings and that we have that same gift today. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet. That he listened and obeyed the hard things and great things came from that obedience. I know we have local leaders who do the same thing. I know that our bishop and stake president have the keys to lead and direct us here in the Newark 1st ward. I know that they listen to and follow direction from our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

I am thankful for this opportunity to serve and grow. I know I will make mistakes. I know I will fail sometimes. But I also know that the Lord will qualify those He calls. That is a promise to anyone who has been given a calling. I also promise I will do all I can to be worthy of that promised blessing. I ask for your patience as I work to do what I am asked, and your forgiveness when I make mistakes.

I love you all and can’t wait to get to know you better!

Much love,

Buffy Bentley
