This Turtle is trapped in a net that was lost when fish men were trying to catch another type of sea creature. This happens a lot with in our seas its called by-catch. Looking in this picture you can clearly see how the sea turtle was not the wanted prey.
In this photo you see a large sea turtle that was pulled out of the ocean when fishers when they were trying to catch what they needed. They plan to put this turtle and all of the other animals back in the sea. But, you can clearly see that the turtle and the rest of the animals cant live in these conditions because of what happened. When put back into the sea there are very few who are still a live and even fewer that will serve in the ocean.
Loggerhead turtles numbers are decreasing rapidly. The primary reason is the amount caught in nets, traps, or any other item that creates by-catch. In 2000 over 200000 were caught by accident on the Commercial long lines. Since then there has luckily been a decrease in the amount caught.
WWF is one of the groups working to create safer environment for these sea turtles. The biggest thing the are working on is the circle hooks which are a lot less likely to get caught in the throat of a sea turtle. They are also changing up bait to see which is the less likely bait to attract a sea turtle. Since this started over 700 fishing vessels have made changes to the way they run their fishing tech-niches.
This info-graphic introduces us to the world of the Sea Turtle. There are 7 species of sea turtles in our ocean and every single one is effected by by-catch. Unlike any other this shows us how America isn't even the biggest problem with by-catch of sea turtles but lower Europe is. Knowing this we can see how this will have to be a world wide change.
Seen in the graphs every single species is highly affected by the standard hook sea turtles being the highest by-catch victims. When the hooks were changed to circle hooks there was a huge drop for most species. Except for the rays who stayed the same. But this showed a huge accomplishment into stopping the by-catch and growing further in the stop of decreased populations.
There are hospitals in Florida that are devoted to saving these turtles. Most of the turtles that are helped here have been effected by pollution or were apart of by-catch. Here they are brought back to the standard health and released back into the ocean.
When sea turtles are born they have a long journey to get to the sea where most of them don't make it. once in the ocean they have a lot more to deal with and barley any serve from birth. Now their is a a new predator out there and they have troubles serving past that. By- catch is lowering the number even further than we have seen before. Now its time to finish the change in the Pacific Ocean.
Knowing that we cant be 100% by-catch free we are working on new ways to help prevent by-catch as much as possible. Realizing the impact was the first step. our step now is finding new technology and techniques to help solve this problem.
Researchers have found out that there is a way to keep sea turtles out of the mix in by-catch. By having new water safe found LED lights connected to nets keeping the sea turtles from accidentally getting in tangled in them. So far this has proved a huge impact on these turtles.
As shown in this video many Sea turtles need our help to serve. Even if you can't personally go take a net off of one you can see how the problem needs to be fixed. It will take all of us to help find the Solution.
