President Donald Trump announced he was reversing a policy made by Barack Obama that allowed transgender people in the military. Reasons why this was a good idea is that transgender soldiers are not always combat ready because they need to get hormone treatments and follow up visits after they have “transitioned.” Also there is a problem that when men who identify as a woman are going through training, they shouldn’t be held at a lower standard than other men. Finally, taxpayer money should not be used on controversial sex-reassignment therapies.
President Donald Trump has stopped transgender individuals from serving in the military. He wants this implemented by March of 2018. This will stop the military from paying for sexual reassignment surgery for military members who are transgender. Trump first announced this on July 26 via Twitter.
Trump banned transgender people from serving “in any capacity” in the military. This could affect thousands of Americans that are transgender soldiers right now. The LGBT community has vowed to challenge President Trump in court. Democrat and some Republican senators are disagreeing with this by saying “Any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving.” Senator John McCain said. Many are outraged about the decision.
First it was the African Americans that were going to not live up to military expectations then it was women who were not going to be good enough for the military. Then it was gay and lesbian people who were not suitable for the U.S. military. Now it the transgender people that we are talking about that are not going to be good for the military.
Edie Dixon is a transgender woman who agrees with Donald Trump’s decision to ban transgender people from the military. Edie argues that transgender have no more “right” to join the U.S. Army that any other people that have diabetes or asthma. She said, “We should be disqualified at enlistment because we are medically reliant.” Edie says Trump is doing a “great job” at keeping the American citizens safe.
Caitlyn Jenner argues that studies estimate that there are 15,000 transgender soldiers in the military right now. That would mean that if we took all of these people out of the military, then we would take people out of critical positions. She also argues that 19 other countries have integrated transgender soldiers in their military and are doing fine. “America’s 15,000 trans service members and 134,000 veterans are much braver than you, Mr. Trump; my allegiance is with them and our country, not you.” - Caitlyn Jenner.
