Siddhartha, being the main character in the novel, pushes himself to find spiritual enlightenment of himself and the world. Govinda, Siddhartha's best friend, follows Siddhartha along on his journey with the Samanas and is his best supporter. This making him another main character in the story. Kamala is Siddhartha's lover in the book, teaching him about Love and teaching him a new way of life apart of the Samanas. Vasudeva taught Siddhartha secrets about the river, and helped Siddhartha on his long journey to enlightenment. Vasudeva is extremely important because he "achieves enlightenment only because of his association with Vasudeva" as quoted from sparknotes. The characters each have a different story which play into how the novel plays out in the end, making each character important.

Siddhartha then believes he needs to expand his knowledge and continues on his journey for spiritual enlightenment. It states on the website "Buddhism is based on the teachings of a Nepali prince named Siddhartha Gautama who lived around 500 BCE." This quote is probably one of the most important pieces of information that could relate to the story, because it tells Siddharthas Journey, and the Buddhist religion is based around Siddhartha teachings.
